Somerset Patriots’ Portland Sea Dogs Recap

Portland, Maine -- The Somerset Patriots took four of six on the road against the Portland Sea Dogs to improve their record to 34-23 and have won 16 of their last 22 games. The Patriots are leading the Eastern League Division with Binghampton and Erie just one game back in the standings. They will be back at TD Bank Ballpark 9/5 - 9/10 for a six game series against Detroit Tigers Double-A affiliate, Erie SeaWolves on their last home stand before playoffs.

Game 1 (8/29): 3-1 W 

The Patriots won a low scoring 3-1 game thanks to a good start from Yoendrys Gomez. Gomez pitched 4.2 scoreless innings with six strikeouts and nearly got his first win of the season. The Patriots offense got started with a two-run single by outfielder Jeisson Rosario to take a 2-0 lead. Ben Rice picked up his 14th multi hit game in Double-A and Augustin Ramirez went 2-4. The Patriots scored their third run do the game on a balk.

Hitting:

Rosario: 1-2, 2 RBI, 2 BB

Rice: 2-5 (14th multi hit game in AA)

Ramirez: 2-4, 2B

Pitching:

Gomez: 4.2 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 6 SO

Game 2 (8/30): 13-6 W - Patriots registered their seventh straight win 5-2, and tied their franchise record of longest winning streak.

The Patriots got their first run with an RBI single from Ramirez. Anthony Siegler’s solo shot was the only home run for the Patriots. Sacrifice flies were added by Spencer Jones and Aaron Palensky. Bailey Dees got the save for the Patriots pitching a scoreless ninth.

Hitting:

Rice: 4-5, 2 HR, 5 RBI - Rice has been unbelievable and will do something remarkable every series. This series he registers his second (2) HR game of the season. Ben records a season-high of 5 RBI and his 15th multi-hit game and third four-hit game out of 34 games in Double-A.

Jones: 2-4, 1 HR, 4 RBI - Spencer Jones completed his first career Double-A home run, a grand slam to put the Patriots up by 8-6 on his third Double-A appearance.

Jack Neely: 2 IP, 0 ER, 3 SO

Game 3 (8/31): 5-2 W 

Hitting:

Siegler: 1-2, 1 HR, 1 RBI

Caleb Durbin: 1-3, 2B, 1 RBI - Since being reinstated off the IL, Durbin is slashing .341/.420/.455 with 7 SB.

Ramirez: 1-4, 1 RBI

Pitching:

Drew Thorpe 5.1 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 9 SO - Thorpe earned his fourth straight win in his fourth outing in Double-A and 14th win in all of Minor Leagues holding the record of most wins.

Dees: 1 IP, 0 ER, 1 SV

Game 4 (9/1): 2-1 W  - With Friday's game win the Patriots completed their eight-game winning streak

The Patriots won a low scoring game 2-1 and the offense came from RBI’s from Mickey Gasper and Rosario. Josh Maciejewski picked up his first save of the season with 2.1 scoreless innings and two strikeouts.

Hitting:

Gasper: 2-2, 1 RBI

Rosario: 1-3, 1 RBI

Maciejewski: 2.1 IP, 0 ER, 2 SO, 1 SV - First save in Double-A

Sauer: 6.2 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 11 SO -  Matt Sauer set a new record with a season-high: innings pitching and strikeouts. Sauer registered his fourth win of the season on Friday. 

Game 5 (9/2): 5-1 L - Patriots snapped their eight-game winning streak which was the longest for Somerset dating back to September 2021

Hitting:

Gasper 1-3, 2B, 1 RBI -Mickey Gasper had a good game on defense and offense. He scored the only run of the game in the seventh inning

Despite the loss, the Patriots put together some nice defensive plays

Game 6 (9/3) : 8-3 L 

Gomez had a rough outing in his second start of the series, but did manage to throw a season high 79 pitches. His overall numbers still look good with 57 innings pitched, 66 strikeouts and an ERA of 3.47 on the season.

Hitting:

Durbin 2-3, 2B, HR, 1 RBI - Led the game with a solo HR shot and registered his 14th multi-hit game of the season 

Max Burt: 2-4, 1 RBI

Pitching:

Danny Watson 1.1 IP, 0 ER, 1 SO - Watson holds a 1.56 ERA and 40 K in 34.2 IP since his promotion to Double-A
