Somerset Patriots' and Erie SeaWolves Recap

Bridgewater, NJ -- The Somerset Patriots played the Detroit Tigers Double-A Affiliate the Erie SeaWolves. The series ended in a three game split and three extra inning games. These teams could very well meet in the Eastern League Playoffs since they both were first half champions. Somerset is 79-52 on the season and Erie is 73-58.

Game 1: Sept 5th, 9-7 L (10 Innings). Trey Sweeney and T.J. Rumfield return to the lineup on game one of the series. Despite the loss, the bats were hot with hitting from Max Burt reached his career-high in home runs with (12), and seventh multi-hit game this season. Agustin Ramirez and Eduardo Torrealba each collected a double and RBI, respectively. Richard Fitts was hit with four early runs, before sending down nine of the final 11 batters he faced. Fitts final line: 6 IP, 4 ER, 4 SO

Hitting:

Burt: 3-5, HR, 4 RBI

Torrealba: 2-3, 2B, RBI

Jeisson Rosario: 2-4, 2B, RBI

Game 2: Sept 6th, 5-4 W (10 innings). Spencer Jones played an incredible game on the base paths stealing three bases. Jones also picked up two singles. The Patriots scored two runs in the second to take the lead after Drew Thorpe gave up a solo shot in the first. Burt had a sacrifice fly and Torrealba had an RBI single.

The Patriots held a 2-1 lead until the ninth when Jace Jung hit a solo home run to tie it. Jung also went yard in the 10th to put the Patriots in a 4-2. The bats got to work in the 10th, started by a lead off walk from Elijah Dunham. Jones hit a single and Ben Rice drove in Dunham to cut the lead to 4-3. Ramirez tied it up with an RBI single, setting the stage for T.J. Rumfield. Rumfield delivered another walk-off win with a single for a Patriots' victory win.

Hitting:

Jones: 2-5, 3SB - Spencer Jones stole three bases in one game the most in his career.

Rumfield: 1-4 (Walk-off Single)

Ramirez: 1-4 (Game tying single)

Rice: 1-5, 1 RBI

Burt: 1-3, 1 RBI

Torrealba: 1-3, 1 RBI

Pitching:

Thorpe only pitched four innings and threw 54 pitches. He gave up one run and struck out four batters. He’s pitched a career high 138 innings and had minor discomfort in his left throwing arm. Thorpe has arguably been the best pitcher in Minor League Baseball this season and recently added to the MLB Pipeline’s top 100 rankings. Carlos Gomez was great out of the bullpen pitching two scoreless innings with four strikeouts.

Game 3: Sept 7th, 4-3 L - The Patriots were defeated on Thursday by the SeaWolves. Burt extended his hit streak with an RBI single to four games, and RBI for the third straight game. Rice registered his 17th multi-hit game in Double-A. In the eighth inning, Rumfield hit a double to move Ramirez to third and a sac-fly by Anthony Seigler cuts the lead to 4-3, but Patriots were not able to score after the eighth.

Hitting:

Seilger: 0-2, sac-fly

Rice: 2-5

Burt: 1-4, 1 RBI

Rumfield: 1-3, 2B

Pitching:

Matt Sauer: 5.2 IP, 3 ER, 4 SO gets the loss after an 11-strikeout game last outing. Despite the loss, Sauer did not allow any hits after the third inning.

Tanner Myatt: 1 IP, 0 ER, 1 SO

Game 4: Sept 8th, 4-3 W (11 innings) - Rice walked it off for the Patriots for Star Wars night. This is the Patriots' second walk-off this series and eighth this season. The game went to 11 innings as did three of the six games this series. Blane Abeyta received a no decision and struck out eight batters allowing only two hits in six innings. 

Pitching:

Abeyta: 6 IP, 2 ER, 8 SO

Danny Watson: 2.1 IP, 0 ER, 1 SO

Hitting:

Jones: 2-3, 2 BB

Rice: 4-5, 2 2B, 2 RBI 

Mickey Gasper: 1-3, HR, 1 RBI, 2 BB

Game 5: Sept 9th, 5-3 L 

The Patriots scored on a wild pitch in the first to take a 1-0 lead.  Jones picked up two hits and stole his 40th base of the season in the fifth inning. Patriots tied it up in the sixth with RBI doubles from Burt and Rosario. They wouldn’t score for the rest of the game and gave up runs in the seventh and ninth in a 5-3 loss.

Pitching:

Yoendrys Gomez had three no hit innings, but hit a wall in the fourth inning. He gave up three runs to put the Patriots in a 3-1 deficit. He threw a season high 84 pitches and struck out five batters.

Myatt: 1.2 IP, 0 ER, 3 SO

Jones: 2-4, 1 BB, SB (40)

Burt: 1-4, 2B, RBI

Game 6: Sept 10th, 8-5 W - Patriots defeat SeaWolves in their final regular season home game of the season. They completed the season 37-26 and .587 PCT tied with Richmond Flying Squirrels.

Pitching:

Fitts earned the win and improved 10-5 this season. He became the first 10-game winner in Somerset Patriots Double-A franchise history.

The Patriots hit the road again for their last regular season series to face the Toronto Blue Jays Double-A affiliate, New Hampshire Fisher Cats in a six-game series beginning on Tuesday September 12.
