The New York Wolves: Pioneers of the Gridiron, Champions of Change

The Dawn of a New Era in Women's Sports

In recent years, there's been a shift in the landscape of sports, allowing women's sports to bask in the well-deserved spotlight. From basketball and volleyball to soccer, global viewership and enthusiasm for women's sports are rising, signaling a positive trend towards equality and recognition in athletics, something we saw in the NCAA Women's basketball tournament.

Even though women's sports are on the rise, certain areas still lag, including football. Enter the New York Wolves, a formidable force in professional tackle women's football whose journey and success story on the gridiron deserve widespread recognition and admiration. They are champions and should not be overlooked.

An Unexpected Introduction: Honors at Barclays Center

The New York Wolves were at the Barclays Center last summer when the Liberty hosted the Aces in a sold-out matchup. Many were introduced to the Wolves for the first time as they were being recognized at halftime for their undefeated championship season.

After witnessing the New York Liberty secure a dominant home victory over the Aces, a JSN reporter ventured out from the suites to check the fans' pulse post-game. Navigating through Barclays Center, the reporter unexpectedly crossed paths with the New York Wolves. Curious and intrigued, he posed a question to them, half-jokingly asking if they were the loudest Liberty fans in the building.

To JSN's delight and surprise, they erupted with sincere energy and enthusiasm, confirming their status as faithful supporters and highlighting the spirited, unshakable character synonymous with their team. This chance encounter introduced JSN to the Wolves and gave a glimpse into the camaraderie and solidarity that thrive in women's sports.

The Wolves' presence was a testament to their "badass" spirit and unparalleled success in women's tackle football. During this period of exploration, JSN asked the one question that reporters often ask fans of New York sports to the Wolves: "Who will bring the next professional title to NYC?" The unexpected and exhilarating response of "The New York Wolves!" from a passionate crowd drew my attention to the real champions amongst us.

The NY Wolves, with their back-to-back undefeated championship seasons, embody the toughness and energy of New York City. Their dominance on the field and electrifying play have captivated fans and made a compelling case for considering them among the best teams in the city's rich sports history.

The Wolves Quest for Glory

This season, the Wolves are not just defending their title but elevating their game to the next level. For the first time, they will compete in the WFA Pro division, challenging seasoned teams like Boston, Pittsburgh, and DC. They are pioneers entering new territories with a high-powered offense led by quarterback Danneille Ayala, receivers Gina Capardi and Alexis Parrotta, NFL Flag Player of the Year Allison Gandlin, and running back Mattique Jones.

They have a formidable defense featuring former WFA Defensive Player of the Year Nhandi Brown, Nia Outlaw, Venika Jarvis, and Ashley Moody-Astwood. The Wolves are on a quest to unseat the 5x National Champion Boston Renegades and become the first team in history to win back-to-back National Titles in Division 2 and the Pro Division.

Their upcoming game against the Detroit Venom at Weldon E. Howitt Middle School in Farmingdale, NY, is more than a season opener. It symbolizes the start of a journey fueled by ambition, skill, and the pursuit of excellence. The Wolves stand as a beacon of inspiration, a team that dreams not only of achieving unmatched success but also of reshaping the narrative around women's sports.

A Call to Rally Behind the Wolves

As the NY Wolves prepare for another groundbreaking season, they continue challenging the narrative surrounding women's sports by setting new standards. Their story is a call to sports fans and aspiring athletes alike to support women's sports with a passion equal to their male counterparts. There's proof of the power of visibility and the importance of support for women's sports. The message of the NY Wolves resonates far beyond the confines of the football field. It's about setting new standards, breaking barriers, and inspiring a generation to dream bigger.

The Wolves' first game will be at home against the Detroit Venom on April 27th at 5:30 p.m. at Weldon E. Howitt Middle School in Farmingdale, NY. They celebrated their ring ceremony this past weekend and had a special event for supporters, including performances to get ready for the 2024 season. The Wolves are full of heart, determination and endless possibilities.
