PWHL New York Shocks PWHL Ottawa at Prudential Center

Tuesday night, PWHL New York (4-4) prevailed at home against the PWHL Ottowa (8-1), 4-3

Early in the game, New York struggled to defend the net, allowing a pair of goals in the opening period. PWHL New York looked outmatched and was dominated as they could not. However, as the game progressed, adjustments in the second period helped them pick up a crucial victory. The gaps began to close, and New York became more aggressive, getting more shots on the net in the second period.

“It was a nice testament to what our team can do,” forward Jade Downie-Landry stated. “I think we’ve had a few rough patches, but I think that kind of put things in perspective for the future. We’re all playing professional hockey because we are competitors. It’s engraved in us. Yes, it’s about pride, but I don’t think anybody will let up. We want to win, regardless of what position we’re in.”

Turning Point for PWHL New York

In the second period, Kayla Vespa scored a go-ahead goal, which led to the onslaught and momentum, allowing New York to defeat Ottawa.

During the game, New York also secured the first overall pick in the 2024 PWHL Draft, which will help to surround the team with more talent. Regardless of the outcome, New York had already been eliminated from playoff contention. Nonetheless, this win snapped a three-game losing streak. Three out of the four wins this season came at home.

“I think we needed that (win)," forward Elizabeth Giguère stated. “I don’t think it was the start that we wanted. We knew they were going to come out hard because they needed this win. We got a good talk in between the periods, got put back into our place, and we just did it for each other. I think everyone worked hard and everyone was going to the net, and (the puck) ended up in the back of the net for once this season. And we loved every second of it.”

Contrary to New York, Ottawa had their four-game win streak snapped with this loss on the road. Throughout the game, they allowed New York to build unbearable momentum. Initially, Ottawa had the game in control. However, they let New York display more grit and toughness.

“We are disappointed and frustrated tonight but we have to turn around quickly. We need to take care of ourselves, get home, and have a good practice on Friday. Then, it’s off to Toronto. We have to take care of business there.”
