It was a solid start to the season for the Scarlet Knights in Independence, Minnesota. On the road, Rutgers placed 7th in a 14-team field during the two day, three-round event. With four of the five players in the lineup returning, the Scarlet Knights looked to use their veteran players to their advantage.

Martín León is the newest Scarlet Knight “on the banks” as he joins Rutgers with two years of eligibility left after transferring from the University of Utah.
Round by Round Recap
After round one Rutgers sat at T4 with a team score of 286 on the par 71 course. Luke Wells led the way with a 70 while Rhett Sellers was right behind him with a 71. Martín León shot a 72, Xavier Marcourx shot a 73 and Weston Jones shot a 78.
However, Jones’ score did not count towards the teams total as in collegiate golf five players travel and play, but only the top four scores from the five players count towards the actual team score.
After round two Rutgers still stayed at T4 after putting up a team score of 281. Sellers led the way this time, shooting a 67. Wells stayed consistent and shot a 70 once again. Marcourx also brought in a 70 to the clubhouse, while León scored a 78 and Jones a 74.
After the third and final round Rutgers found themselves in solo seventh place after putting up a team score of 289. Jones led the team this round with a 68, while Wells shot a 72. León came in third with a 74, while Sellers and Marcourx both brought a 75 to the clubhouse.
Wells came in first for the Scarlet Knights with a T11 finish against the field and an overall score of 212 (-1). Sellers was second for Rutgers with a T15 finish and an overall score of 213 (E).
Coming in at third for the Scarlet Knights, a T40 finish and an overall score of 218 (+5) was Marcourx. Weston Jones was fourth for Rutgers with an overall score of 220 (+7) and a T49 finish. Lastly for the Scarlet Knights was León, who finished T59 and had an overall score of 224 (+11).
Breaking it Down
The Scarlet Knights had a solid showing at the Gopher Invitational, however inconsistent scores were ultimately the difference between third place and seventh for Rutgers. On the bright side Luke Wells was extremely consistent for the Scarlet Knights, while Rhett Sellers was able to break through his scorecard with a season low 67.
In order for Rutgers to place higher in team events they need their three, four and five guys putting up lower scores. When it comes to golf every stroke counts so being as consistent and productive as possible will lead to more success for the Scarlet Knights. College golf is a very long season so there is a ton of time for Rutgers to build off of this very solid start. The best is yet to come for Rutgers Men’s Golf.
