Red Bulls pick up 3rd straight draw as they struggle to find wins

The New York Red Bulls came away with another point against the Vancouver Whitecaps FC after a 1-1 draw. It was another match with the potential for three points, but unfortunately, they could not secure the win.

Vancouver opened things up in the 15th minute with a cheeky heel flick goal from Brian White. The former Red Bull, who spent four years in New York, recorded his sixth goal in the season.

The Red Bulls moved pieces around this match, with midfielder Frankie Amaya unable to start. This moved Wiki Carmona to the center midfield position, with Dennis Gjengaar taking the wing. New York struggled early on with possession and creating chances as they got used to this formation.

Head coach Sandro Schwarz spoke on the club’s performance.

“Today, after 20 minutes was not good in the first half, and this is what we have to analyze and we have to improve very quick," Schwarz said. "In some moments to have this consequence to play forward, to play forward very quick, and some moments to have more deep runs to create more situations in the box, in the opponent's box.”

New York entered the second half down 1-0. The deficit was quickly erased in the 56th minute after Lewis Morgan scored on a header from a corner kick. This was Morgan’s seventh goal in the season, which led the club. The Red Bulls have also scored three goals off corners and set pieces in their last two matches, which the club has been working on for some time.

“We’ve been doing quite a lot of work on [set pieces],” Morgan said. “We knew at the start of the year we hadn’t really capitalized on those moments. Defensively we’ve been pretty good but we weren’t scoring goals on them. Now you’re starting to see what we’re putting on.”

New York had no shortage of chances, with 16 shots (nine on goal) compared to Vancouver’s 11 (four on goal). The Red Bulls did well creating chances inside the box but hesitated too often when taking shots or creating passes instead of shooting.

The momentum and game plan changed course in the 74th minute when Noah Eile received a red card after he raised his hand and hit the ball while it was in the air. It was a costly error for the 21-year-old that forced the team to play a man short for the rest of the match. But New York held their own and maintained a level game at the finish.

“I think we were the better team overall," Team captain Emil Forsberg said. "We kept the ball and we kept creating chances. We came out, playing a fantastic second half, scored a goal and then we get a red card. Of course, it changed the game. I mean, it's hard. We wanted to win today and I think we were on a good path but sometimes mistakes happen. We have to keep looking forward. Keep evolving. It's irritating because I think we could have won today and we didn't.”

New York continues to struggle to obtain three points when they're in reach. This was the team's third straight draw, and with a tough schedule ahead, the Red Bulls could have used those wins. Next up, New York is back on the road, heading south for a match against Miami CF. The last time these two played was at Red Bull Arena, where the Red Bulls picked up a statement win. However, Miami will have Lionel Messi back and will look to get revenge on their home turf.

The match will be on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at Chase Stadium.
