PWHL New York

Game 22: PWHL New York VS PWHL TOR Preview

On Sunday, PWHL New York is back at UBS Arena, where they will face off against PWHL Toronto for the last time this season. New York is coming into Sunday’s matchup after a devastating 4-1 loss to PWHL Montreal. Montreal also happens to be the last opponent Toronto faced, where Toronto pulled off the 3-2 overtime win.

With the loss against Montreal, New York became mathematically eliminated from the playoffs, but that doesn’t mean the team doesn’t have anything to play for. The PWHL Golden Plan puts purpose into the final games after elimination. The Gold Plan assigns the first overall pick to the team that picks up the most points after their elimination. The incentive to win in order to secure the first overall pick will be important for the future success of the team.

In order to secure the first overall pick, NY needs to tighten up their defensive play. In their previous game,  NY started the game off strong, pestering shots on the Montreal goaltender. Once the Montreal offense started to pick up momentum, the game went sideways for NY. Montreal was able to produce so many chances in front of the net that New York was not able to defend. The goals just kept on coming for Montreal because the down-low net battles were easy to win.

New York’s other major problem is staying out of the penalty box. PWHL NY plays their best game during 5 on 5. When they take penalties, it comes at a great cost. The special teams just haven’t seemed to click this year, and New York has faced the consequences of this many times this season. In order to secure three important points towards their draft capital, staying out of the box will be key.

PWHL New York will look to gain momentum from the home crowd as they look to end their final three games on a high note.
