Girls Soccer Recap: GCIT stuns Eastern in SJG4 Quarterfinal

The Eastern Regional High School Girls Soccer team was on a 14-game unbeaten streak dating back to September 26. The Viking's last loss came to Group 3 power Shawnee, 1-0.

That streak was broken on Monday by Gloucester Tech.

The eighth seeded Cheetahs stunned the top seeded Vikings, 2-1, in the Quarterfinal round of the NJSIAA South Jersey Group 4 playoffs on Monday afternoon.

Gloucester Tech led 1-0 at halftime after a goal from junior Sophia Saladino. Eastern junior Johnna Gonter responded in the second-half with a goal to even things up 1-1. Senior defender Remi Charkas provided the assist for Gonter's goal. The Vikings had plenty of opportunities to take the lead in regulation, but junior goalkeeper Layla Connor came up big to keep the score level at 1 at the end of 80 minutes.

The game then went into overtime where Gloucester Tech (10-8-1) freshman Megan Sullivan netted the game-winning goal with three seconds left to stun Eastern (19-2-3) in the quarterfinal round of the NJSIAA South Jersey Group 4 playoffs. Connor stopped a career-high 18 shots for the Cheetahs.

GCIT will play at Kingsway this Thursday, Nov. 2, in the SJG4 semifinal round.
