Complex Questions and Simple Answers: Why the Giants passed on J.J. McCarthy

After months of speculation of what The New York Giants would do with the 6th pick in the 2024 NFL Draft we finally received our answer. On Thursday night Giants fans collectively held their breath as they waited to see which direction Joe Schoen would go in with both J.J. McCarthy and Malik Nabers still on the board. By now we all know that Big Blue selected WR Mailk Nabers out of LSU which left some fans scratching their heads and wondering why the Giants passed on taking a Quarterback.

It's no secret that Daniel Jones is coming off a sub-par 2023 season where he also had to deal with an ACL injury in which both Head Coach Brian Daboll and General Manager Joe Schoen have said he is on track with his rehabilitation so far. With the Giants passing on a Quarterback in first and subsequent rounds of the draft it is safe to say that expectations are sky high for the $40 million dollar man.

Passing on a Quarterback speaks volumes and when Joe Schoen was asked how he weighed his decision between Nabers and McCarthy he simply said “Malik was our guy. He was the guy we targeted. And we took him. There were other players on the board, and we took him.” an explanation that seems simple enough but not for some media pundits, content creators and fans. Last week Joe Schoen told the media that he was comfortable going into the season with Daniel Jones, Drew Lock and Tommy DeVito. Schoen also repeatedly told everyone how much he liked all the talent at Wide Receiver that this draft had to offer. Reading between the lines is what lead to a lot of us predicting that Nabers would be the pick.

When Schoen was pressed a bit on the rumor that the Giants were trying to trade with the Patriots to take Quarterback Drake Maye he said “We had a lot of conversations with a lot of teams. I'm not going to get into specifics. We had a really good player at six, that was a position that I think was a need that we needed to upgrade. I'm fired up about the kid.” In his pre-draft press conference Schoen said they received a surprising number of calls from teams interested in trading up and that they were listening. To say the Giants spoke to several teams throughout this process is accurate however none of those trade conversations came to fruition.

Whether the fans like it or not the Giants do in fact have a Quarterback and the organization has made it crystal clear that they have all the confidence in the world in Daniel Jones. Let’s just hope Jones continues on his path to recovery and has a successful 2024 season!
