Somerset Patriots’ Series Recap — WHO'S HOT?

BRIDGEWATER -- After losing the first two games, the Somerset Patriots took four straight wins from the Hartford Yard Goats in a six-game set.

Series vs Yard Goats: 7/18-7/23

G1: L 7-5 
 
The first game of this set was an ugly 7-5 loss. Despite the score, the Patriots only tacked on four hits this game. The Yard Goats pitching gave up five walks along with hitting two batters. Josh Breaux struck out with bases loaded in the sixth. Jasson Dominguez hit a solo shot and Trey Sweeney delivered a three-run triple in the sixth to make the score 6-5.

The Somerset Patriots jumped out to a 4-0 lead against the Hartford Yard Goats in the third inning. Blane Abeyta was pulled after 5 1/3 innings with a 4-3 lead. Reliever Jesus Liranzo gave up two runs in the seventh and the Yard Goats took a 5-4 lead.
 
Designated hitter Ben Rice hit a game-tying single in the eighth inning and Sweeney put the Patriots back in front 7-5 with a two-run double. Tanner Myatt pitched the eighth and gave up two runs.
 
The game was tied at seven after eight innings. Rice came through again with his second hit and RBI of the game to give the Patriots an 8-7 lead. Second Baseman Mickey Gasper added an RBI single to put the Patriots in front 9-7. Alex Mauricio entered the game with a save opportunity. Mauricio had a rough inning giving up a home run and a walk-off single as the Patriots lost a heartbreaker 10-9.

Chase Hampton pitched seven innings of four-run ball with seven strikeouts. Patriots were down 4-0 in the seventh inning. Tyler Hardman and Elijah Dunham hit back-to-back home runs for the Patriots' first two runs.
 
It was 4-2 entering the eighth when Dominguez added an RBI single. Tyler Hardman came through again with an RBI single to tie the game at four.
 
Danny Watson held the Yard Goats scoreless in the ninth and 10th innings for his third win of the season since being called up to Somerset.

Hardman continued his huge night with a two-run home run to win it, 6-4, in 11 innings!

The Patriots rolled Hartford early with Hardman’s 23rd home run for two runs in the first. Dunham and Breaux also homered in the game. Dominguez, Sweeney and Max Burt each added RBIs in the 9-2 rout.
 
Yoendrys Gomez started and had six strikeouts in 3 2/3 innings of one run ball. Edgar Barclay came in relief and pitched four innings with seven strikeouts as he picked up the win.

T.J. Rumfield got the Patriots started with a three-run bomb in the first.

 

Rice hit a home solo home run in the second and Willie Calhoun hit a two-run bomb in fifth to make it 6-1. Rice went deep again with another solo home run to make it 7-1. Rice helped the Patriots roll to an easy win with four hits and four RBI.
 
In his third Double-A game and first catching, Rice went 4-for-5 with two homers, two runs scored, two doubles and four RBIs.

Nestor Cortes made his first rehab appearance with Somerset and gave up one run in 2 1/3 innings with four strikeouts. The Patriots' offense backed him in the second with solo home runs from Rumfield and Dunham. Sweeney added an RBI double for a 3-1 lead.
 
Matt Sauer picked up the win in bulk relief duty giving up just one run over five innings with six strikeouts.
 
Dunham added another RBI with a double in the third. Hardman hit his 24th home run of the season to put the Patriots up 6-2 in the eight.

BaySox Series:7/25-7/30

The Patriots had a dominant series win taking five out of six games from the Baltimore Orioles Double-A affiliate the Bowie BaySox. The Patriots outscored Bowie 41-17 in the series.
 
Nestor Cortes and Willie Calhoun continued their rehab assignments. Cortes pitched four scoreless innings and struck out five batters. He worked quickly and filled up the zone with strikes only throwing 13 balls in 49 pitches.
 
Those was Cortes’ last rehab start before he went back to the New York Yankees.
 
Calhoun went 4-for-13 against the BaySox. He hit safely in all three games he played. He was designated for assignment by the Yankees on July 28th.
 
Barclay continued his lights out season with four innings of one run ball giving up just one hit and striking out six batters. His performance earned him a promotion to the Yankees Triple-A affiliate the Scranton Wilkes-Barre RailRiders.

Yankees 18th ranked prospect third baseman Tyler Hardman hit two home runs and drove in six runs in one game. Hardman leads Double-A with 26 home runs and won the Eastern League player of the month in July. Hardman hit 10 home runs and drove in 20 runs in July.

Trey Sweeney, Elijah Dunham and Josh Breaux each hit one home run in the series. Micky Gasper hit a walk-off single and drove in two runs during the series. Jession Rosario had a big series with six RBI. Max Burt had a three hit game with two RBI.

RubberDucks Series

The Patriots fell to 60-40 after the series loss to the RubberDucks on Sunday. Despite a tough series there was still some noteworthy performances by the Patriots.

Dominguez stayed hot as he had a three hit game including two doubles. He hit a two-run double to close out the RubberDucks and extended his on base streak to 15 games.

On Wednesday, Dominguez extended his season best on base streak to 12 games. He currently holds a 17 game on-base streak.

During this span, Dominguez is 16-for-52 (.308/.379/.346) with nine RBIs, seven runs, six walks and five stolen bases. Dominguez also stole his 30th base of the season.

He currently leads the league with (34) total. Dominguez also recorded his team-leading 23rd multi-hit game of the season.

On Saturday night, Dominguez (3-for-5, 2 RBI, 2 2B) broke a scoreless tie with two outs in the top of the ninth inning with a game-winning two-run double that gave the Patriots both of their runs in the 2-0 win.

 

Fitts, who was selected by the Yankees in the 6th round of the 2021 MLB Draft has been lights out since his promotion to double-A. His last win for Somerset on 8/4 marked Somerset’s eighth shutout win of the season.

Fitts worked around two walks in the third, a double in the 7th, those were the biggest threats.

He also leads the league in IP (106.2), K (118) and ranks fifth in ERA (3.80). His 11 quality starts this season are tied for the most in Minor League Baseball.

Over his last 12 starts going back to May, Fitts has posted 10 quality starts with a 2.70 ERA over 73.1 IP with 82 K, 16 BB, a 1.01 WHIP and .212 BAA.

He talked about his motivation on being called up to Triple-A with Grayson Beeter.

Matt Sauer pitched a no-hitter through five innings with a season-high of 80 pitches. Selected by the Yankees in the second round of the 2017 MLB Draft, Sauer pitched 13 straight scoreless innings dating back to his start against Hartford.

Sauer is the Yankees 20th ranked prospect and set a Patriots strikeout record last season with 17 in a game against the Toronto Blue Jays Double-A affiliate New Hampshire Fisher Cats. Sauer’s career stats are 343.2 innings pitched with 373 strikeouts and an ERA of 3.25.

The Patriots were not able to split the series with RubberDucks, which would be the first time in three years that the Patriots and RubberDucks have not split all three series they've played against one another.

On to the Subway Series as the Double-A Mets Affiliate Rumble Ponies in Subway Series from 8/8-8/13 in Somerset! The Patriots called up the Yankees top pitching prospect Drew Thorpe from Hudson Valley. Catching prospect Agustin Ramirez was also called up as well as RHP Jack Neely.
