Trenton Thunder Report: Thunder Offense Sputters in Loss to Keys

After getting canceled by way of a severe thunderstorm warning Monday night, the Trenton Thunder were back in action as they started their series against the Frederick Keys Tuesday looking to take the season series against them in front of a sellout crowd at Trenton Thunder Ballpark.

The pitching matchup was good to start the series as Virginia Tech product Jonah Hurney would put his 3-0 record on the line against Limestone southpaw James Deloatch.

After a scoreless opening frame, the Keys would shell Hurney in the top of the second led by a Roberto Pena double, then a triple off the bat of Andrew Papantonis. After a walk to Logan Thomason, Hernan Yanez would single home Papantonis. Kirkland Banks would single then, Alec Sanchez would cap off the inning with a rare sac fly double play to make it 3-0 Frederick.

Deloatch would hold the Thunder scoreless through five innings but after a Thomason homer in the top of the 6th, the Trenton Thunder would battle back in the bottom of the inning - first off a Ramon Jimenez line drive single that scored Kolby Johnson, then Joe Impeduglia would make it 4-2 with an RBI single of his own.

Hurney would last five innings, allow three runs (all earned) on nine hits, walked one and struck out three. On the Keys' side of the box score, Deloatch lasted six innings, allowing two runs (both earned) on seven hits, walked one and struck out four.

Sanchez would burn the Thunder again with an RBI double in the top of the eighth inning to make it 5-2 and the Trenton Thunder just could not provide the answer as the Frederick bullpen would shut the door on the Thunder with Caiden Wood coming in for the 9th inning to finish the game. What also didn't help matters for the Thunder - five errors in the game. With the loss, the Trenton Thunder fall to 31-19 on the season with just under a month to go before the Championship Game on September 3rd.

The Road Ahead

After an off night to allow Trenton Thunder Ballpark to host the Savannah Bananas, the Thunder will conclude their short series against Frederick Thursday night with first pitch scheduled for 7 PM.
