How Carlos Rodón Latest IL Stint Adds To His Gloomy First Year With Yankees

The 2023 season could not be more disappointing for Carlos Rodón, between the injuries and the poor performance. The Yankees have yet to receive the star they brought in from the San Francisco Giants.

Rodón's latest injury occurred this past Sunday during game four of the series against the Houston Astros. In the bottom of the third, Rodón was seen grabbing his left leg after he delivered a pitch. Following a mound visit by the trainers and manager Aaron Boone, he was removed from the game.

Rodón, who was already having an unimpressive first three innings, was allegedly pulled because of hamstring tightness.

In the post game interview, Rodón said that he felt it “grab for a second and it felt like a cramp”, but after the mound visit he felt fine. Rodón stated that his removal was more of a precautionary move than a necessary one.

On Monday, Rodón went for an MRI and a hamstring strain was revealed. Following the results, the Yankees placed Rodón on the 15-day injured list and provided no time line for his return.

This injury is just one of many that Rodón has had during his first season with the Yankees. It all started with a forearm strain in early spring training, which kept him out for some time. During that time, Rodón also developed a back issue, which furthered his return.

Rodón didn’t make his Yankees debut until July 6th against the Chicago Cubs, where he had a decent showing, going for 5.1 innings and allowing four hits, two earned runs, two walks and recording two strikeouts.

However, the 162 million dollar man slowly started to disappoint every time he went out on the mound. Since his debut, Rodón has pitched in 27 innings and has an ERA of 7.33 with 25 strikeouts and 18 walks.

His ERA is the second worst in his career, with his only higher ERA being in 2020 (8.22), where he only played in four games.

Clearly, the long awaited Rodón we are seeing is not the one that anyone expected in the Yankees organization. The supposed second Yankees ace next to Gerrit Cole is one of the worst in the rotation.

Currently among the Yankees starters, Rodón sits at the fifth best ERA, with only Severino (7.74) behind him.

The only word to describe 2023 for Rodón is disappointing. All anyone can do right now is hope that 2024 will be the return of the real Rodón as 2023 has already slipped away from him.
