Somerset Patriots Rumble in Binghamton

Binghamton, NY -- The Somerset Patriots and the Mets Double-A affiliate team, the Binghamton Rumble Ponies, completed their Subway Series this weekend. The Rumble Ponies record sat at 38-44  while Patriots who are in second place in the Eastern league, entered with a record of 47-33 before the series began.

Here is what you missed:

GAME 1

Chase Hampton took the ball for his fifth start and earned his very first win in Double-A as they defeat the Ponies in Binghamton by a score of 4-2. The game was shortened due to rain in the bottom of the seventh inning. Trey Sweeney, Jasson Dominguez and Elijah Dunham were the stand out performers on Friday night. Austin Wells also joins them and collected an RBI to cap the scoring.

Top Performers:

Chase Hampton: 5.1 IP, 2 ER, 3 H, 3 BB, 7 K. Hampton ended the night as the Yankees minor league leader in strikeouts 110 over his first 14 career starts.

Trey Sweeney went 2-for-3, RBI, 2 R, BB, he scored a game-high two runs in his 15th multi-hit game of the season.

Jasson Dominguez went 2-for-3, RBI, BB, he registered his team leading 16th multi-hit game of the season. Dominguez has now collected multi-hit games in five out of nine games played during the month of July and three of his last four games overall.

Elijah Dunham went 2-for-4, 2B, he collected multiple hits for his second straight game. Dunham ends the night on a four-game hit streak for Somerset in which he has gone 7-for-15.

GAME 2

The Somerset Patriots were defeated by the Binghamton Rumble Ponies by a score of 3-1 on Saturday night.

Top Performers:

Yoendrys Gomez was the starting pitcher, line: 2.2 IP, 1 ER, 1 H, 2 BB, 5 K. He threw a season-high 57 pitches in his ninth outing of the year, matching his season-high of five strikeouts for a second straight outing.

Edgar Barclay was immaculate, pitching 5.0 IP, 2 ER, 6 H, 0 BB, 6 K, matched a season-high six strikeouts for his third straight appearance, over a season-high 5.0 innings pitched.

In the bottom of the fifth, Barclay tossed the first immaculate inning in Somerset Patriots affiliated history with nine pitches and nine strikes to fan the bottom third of the Rumble Ponies’ batting order. The 5.0 innings pitched were Barclay’s most ever in a relief outing.  9 pitches, 9 strikes, 3 K - 5th inning

Dominguez is starting to heat up and hits his 11th HR of the season for the Patriots. He is currently 13 - 42 and slashing: .310/.408/.405 .813 OPS

Jasson Dominguez went 2 for 3, RBI, R, HR, BB, hit his 11th home run of the season in the fifth inning, tying the game at 1-1. The home run snapped a season-long 21-game drought without a home run for Dominguez

The performance marked Dominguez’s second straight multi-hit game to open the series in Binghamton. Dominguez now has multiple hits in four of his last five games 8 for 18 and multiple hits in six out of 11 games played during the month of July. His 17 multi-hit games lead the Patriots.

During July, Dominguez is slashing .310/.408/.405 and .813 OPS with 4 RBI, 5 R, 1 HR, 1 2B, 7 BB and 7 SB. Dominguez ends the day with his batting average at a season-high .217, after beginning July with a .197 BA.

GAME 3

The Somerset Patriots defeated the Binghamton Rumble Ponies by a score of 9-4 on Sunday night at Mirabito Stadium in Binghamton, New York.

Top Performers:

Richard Fitts: 5.0 IP, 3 ER, 5 H, 2 BB, 5 K, and earned his fifth win of the season.

Jasson Dominguez went 2-for-4, 2 RBI, R, 3B, BB, hit his second triple of the season, plating two runs in the eighth inning.

This is The Martian's third straight multi-hit game. Dominguez now has multiple hits in five of his last six games 10 for 22 and multiple hits in 7 out of 12 games played during the month of July. His 18 multi-hit games lead the Patriots this month and has raised his batting average 20 points to a season high of .217. He is slashing .326/.426/.457, .883 OPS, with 6 RBI, 6 R, 1 HR, 1 3B, 1 2B, 8 BB and 7 SB for the month of July.

Max Burt BOMB -- he went 1 for 3, RBI, 2 R, HR, 2 BB. Burt opened up Somerset’s scoring in the third inning making the score 2-1. with his eighth homer of the year.

Trey Sweeney stays hot, he went  3 for 5, 2 RBI, 1R put together his fifth three hit game of the season and second multi-hit game of the series in Binghamton. Sweeney’s 16 multi hit games rank second on the Patriots behind Dominguez with 18.

T.J. Rumfield went 2 for 4, RBI, R, 2B, K, registered multiple hits for a second straight game.

Pitching carried the team and held their opponent to nine runs this series which was crucial in winning two out of the three games to the Rumble Ponies. The Somerset Patriots are on pace to win their second consecutive Division Title this season!

Next up for the Patriots:

A round trip to Connecticut to face the Colorado Rockies affiliate, Hartford Yard Goats, beginning Tuesday. Somerset returns home on July 25 to face Bowie.
