Rutgers Volleyball Shocks No. 16 Minnesota At Home

It was a great day to be a Scarlet Knight Saturday night as Rutgers' Volleyball took down No. 16 Minnesota for their first ever top-25 victory in program history. Rutgers also collected their first Big Ten victory of the season after starting off 0-5 in conference play.

Everything was going right for the Scarlet Knights Saturday night as they defeated the Golden Gophers in four sets. Rutgers came out firing, going up 2-0 in the match, but dropped the third set. Thankfully, the Scarlet Knights were able to bounce back and secure the victory in the fourth.

Set By Set Recap

The Scarlet Knights grabbed the first set 25-20 after having a consistent back and fourth scoring battle with the Gophers. Rutgers seemed to be running away with the set after going up 17-12, but a late rally kept the set competitive. The set was highlighted by several nice finishes for the Scarlet Knights.

In set two, the Scarlet Knights continued to build off of the first set as they claimed the second 25-22. Once again, the Scarlet Knights had a good lead, 18-12, but four straight points by the Golden Gophers allowed Minnesota to get back into the set. Fortunately, Rutgers was able to pickup some meaningful points towards the end of the set to secure the set victory.

In the third set, Rutgers was being dominated from the start. The Golden Gophers got out to a 7-1 lead and the Scarlet Knights just couldn't ever climb back. Rutgers dropped set three 25-16.

In set four, the Scarlet Knights responded to the blow out third set with some really nice plays. Rutgers was able to go on a five-point run in the set to go up 16-7, a huge stretch that proved to be crucial. Rutgers seemed to be in the drivers seat the whole fourth set as they dominated Minnesota to grab the set 25-14 and the match win.

What This Victory Means

This top-25 victory is huge for the Scarlet Knights. Not only does this win provide a spark to a Rutgers team who was on a six-game losing streak, but it also provides some confidence for the rest of the season. Currently, the Scarlet Knights are 9-7 overall and 1-5 in the Big Ten, with 14 matches remaining (all Big Ten).

The time is now if Rutgers wants to see postseason play. The Scarlet Knights need to use this momentum to their advantage to capitalize off of a great team win.
