Rutgers field hockey takes down Michigan in OT to remain undefeated

The Scarlet Knights kept on rolling as they took down the No. 15 Wolverines at home Friday afternoon.  A gritty, back-and-forth battle "On the Banks" turned into another overtime victory thriller for Rutgers field hockey.

With 11 games under the Scarlet Knights' belt, they continue to impress. So far, so perfect for Rutgers as they move to a staggering 11-0 on the year.

Scoring Recap

The Scarlet Knights got on the board early in the match, finding the back of the net just seven minutes in. After a penalty corner by the Scarlet Knights was blocked, Rutgers was able to coral the rebound and make a few passes before getting the score. Marique Dieudonne had the nice finish up front for Rutgers.

Despite there being a ton of shots and opportunities by both teams, Michigan didn't respond until 36 minutes into the match. The Wolverines capitalized off of a corner opportunity and equalized the score.

In regulation that was all the scoring viewers were given, but the Scarlet Knights were able to create some magic in overtime to get the huge big ten victory. A gorgeous backhand finish by Guillermina Causarano to lift the Scarlet Knights in the Top 20 battle.

Breaking it down

Despite the Scarlet Knights ending with the same amount of goals in regulation and the win in overtime, Rutgers was beat out in almost every offensive stat category. Michigan had more shots (12), more corners (nine) and the same amount of shots on goal (five). Regardless of the deficit the Scarlet Knights made their opportunities count.

Rutgers goaltender Sophia Howard had a decent day in net with four saves (five shots faced) on the afternoon. Her saves proved crucial in the end, with the scoring being low for the Scarlet Knights. The win in Piscataway marks the Scarlet Knights fifth overtime victory in the past eight games, along with the teams sixth ranked win of the season.

Friday's win over the Wolverines is the Scarlet Knights third ever, and second in the last three meetings. Currently Rutgers is 3-0 in the Big Ten after taking down Penn State, Maryland and now Michigan. There is still a ton of field hockey to be played this year as the Scarlet Knights have six games remaining in the regular season.
