Somerset Patriots' Series Recap: Rumble Ponies, Fightin Phils, and Yard Goats

Bridgewater, NJ-- The Somerset Patriots hosted the Binghamton Rumble Ponies for the second time this season and took a series split with the Mets Double-A Affiliate. The Patriots won the series 4-2 with Phillies Double-A Affiliate, the Reading Fightin Phils.

Patriots Mets Subway Series: 8/8-8/13

The Patriots bullpen was lights out in the six game series against the Mets Double-A affiliate Binghamton Rumble Ponies. Somerset registered 0.58 ERA allowing only 1 Run in 15.1 innings pitched. The starting pitching was also superb with shutouts from Richard Fitts, Drew Thorpe, and Blane Abeyta.

Game 1: L 9-7 against Binghamton

Hitting:

Elijah Dunham 2-4, 2B, 3 RBI

Jasson Dominguez 3-5, 2B, 2 RBI

Game 2: L 4-2

Pitching:

Bailey Dees 2.2 IP, 0 ER

Alex Mauricio 2 IP, 0 ER, 2 SO

The Patriots' scoreless bullpen streak started on game two of the series on the August 9th game. Dees and Mauricio combined for 4.2 scoreless innings to end the game.

Game 3: W 14-0

Fitts set the tone for the staff, going six scoreless innings with seven strikeouts. The bullpen persevered the shutout with three scoreless innings. Tanner Myatt, Josh Maciejewski, and Jesús Liranzo each pitched an inning. The bullpen was now up to 7.2 scoreless innings.

Drew Thorpe was dominant in his Double-A debut with eight shut-out innings and nine strikeouts. Thorpe is the best pitcher in the Yankees Minor League system this season. Lisandro Santos persevered the Patriots' second straight shut-out.

Patriots lost game five 4-0. The bullpen’s scoreless streak was snapped at 8.2 innings when Ryan Anderson gave up a home run. Anderson has been solid since getting called up from Hudson Valley. He’s pitching 17 innings with 18 strikeouts and an ERA of 1.56. Jack Neely and Myatt pitched the last two innings of the game without allowing a run.  Only one run was allowed over 12 innings.

Myatt: 1 IP, 0 ER, 2 SO

Abeyta was amazing, only giving up one hit in six shutout innings. He also struck out seven batters and didn’t walk anyone. Danny Watson stood out in the pen, striking out two batters in a scoreless inning. The Patriots' pen threw three shutout innings.

Fightin Phillies Vs Somerset last series 8-15-8-20

Somerset had a hard fought series with the Philadelphia Phillies double-A affiliate, the Reading Fightin Phils, winning the series 4-2. Somerset was on the road and the series began with a game that was suspended on July 9th. Dees gave up two runs in the 10th and the Patriots lost 6-5.

Game 1: W 4-3 

In the first full game of the series the Patriots won 4-3 Chase Hampton turned in a quality start and got the win. Ben Rice hit the Patriots only home run and drove in two runs. Second baseman Caleb Durbin had an RBI double in his first game back off the injured list. Danny Watson got the save.

Game 2: W 9-3 

In game two, Patriots starting pitcher Yonderys Gomez set the tone with a career high 11 strikeouts in 4.1 innings of one-run ball. Rice went yard for the second game in a row and Dominguez also went deep. Palensky also had a big day with two hits and three RBI.

Game 3: L 5-4 

The Patriots got a good start from Fitts giving up just one run in 5.1 innings. They had a 3-1 lead getting a two-run double by Dominguez and Bastidas. The bullpen gave it up by allowing three runs in the seventh  inning. The Patriots ended up losing 5-4.

Dominguez: 1-4, 2B, 2 RBI

Game 4: W 22-3 

Drew Thorpe led the charge and followed up his dominant debut with another great performance. Thorpe struck out 12 batters and didn’t allow his his first Double-A runs until he gave up two home runs in the seventh. He pitched 14 scoreless innings to start his Double-A career. The offense was in full force, scoring 22 runs. Nine players recorded hits and four home runs were hit. Catcher Agustin Ramirez got his first Double-A home run and Dominguez hit his 15th home run of the year. Burt and Torrealba hit the other two home runs.

Thorpe: 6.2 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 12 SO, 2 HR

Hitting:

Torrealba: 3-6, 1 HR, 7 RBI

Dominguez: 4-6, 1 HR, 3 RBI

Game 5: L 8-7 

The Patriots pitching struggled as starter Matt Sauer gave up five runs in three innings, while the bullpen allowed three runs. Their offense tried to fight back, but ultimately came up short in an 8-7 loss. Palensky had a strong game with a triple, a home run and four RBIs. Dunham and Breaux hit solo home runs.

Game 6: W 6-1 

Abeyta had another strong start to back up his shutout against Binghamton. He gave up one run in 5.2 innings against Reading with five strikeouts. The bats came to play and were lead by a four-hit performance from Dominguez. Dominguez had three doubles and drove in a run. Bastidas hit a solo shot and Ramirez drove in two runs with a single. Palensky continued his hot hitting with an RBI single. Dunham also contributed with two hits and an RBI.

Game 1: W 4-1 (10 Innings) 

The Patriots opened their series with the Colorado Rockies Double-A affiliate, Hartford Yard Goats last night at home. This game was a pitchers duel with very little offense. Yankess top pitching prospect Chase Hampton pitched five scoreless innings with six strikeouts. The game was scoreless until extra innings.

Hartford scored their only run on a wild pitch by Patriots reliever Jack Neely. Neely was still lights out with four strikeouts in three innings. Ben Rice saved the day with the bases loaded and two outs by hitting a walk-off grand slam! Rice looked towards the dugout and celebrated once he saw it clear over the wall in fair territory. The team and fans were excited to pull out the win.

Neely: 3 IP, 0 ER, 4 SO

Myatt: 2 IP, 0 ER, 1 SO

Game 2: L 3-2 

Yoendrys Gomez pitched into the sixth inning for the first time since 2019 and threw a season high 74 pitches. He gave up two runs and struck out five batters. He was pulled with two outs in the sixth.

Josh Breaux had an RBI single in the fourth and Ben Rice hit a solo home run to tie it up in the sixth. Rice homered in back to back games and now has 11 home runs with an OPS of 1.077 in 28 games with the Patriots.

Carlos Gomez: 1.2 IP, 0 ER, 1 SO

The Patriots gave up a run in the ninth and lost the game 3-2. The six-game series against Hartford will resume Thursday night at 7:05 ET to complete the six-game series over the weekend.
