Patriots' T.J. Rumfield named to Baseball America's Yankees Top Prospect list

BRIDGEWATER, NJ -- T.J. Rumfield does it again. He has collected two walk-offs and two grand slams for the Somerset Patriots this season. Rumfield has provided Somerset with clutch moments and has been a critical addition to the lineup.  In his 145 at-bats, he is batting .234 with nine home runs, racked up 29 RBI's and stole five bases while slugging .455 with an .327 OBP. The first clutch walk-off was a sacrifice fly in the ninth inning vs. Reading on May 19th. The most recent walk-off was against the Portland Sea Dogs on June 4th in extra innings with a base hit to right field.

Rumfield's defense is impressive as the first baseman has not made an error in 36 starts. With just three errors last year, he has just three in 81 games total at first base in his career with the Yankees. It comes with no surprise that on June 9th, it was announced that Rumfield was included in Baseball America's Top 30 Yankees prospect rankings, coming in at No. 17. He has been on fire since May and stats have jumped all across the board with an .898 OPS and slugging  .515. He currently sits third in OPS and slugging with Somerset. His exit velocity has turned heads as he topped 110MPH off the bat in High-A Hudson Valley last season and 108 with the Somerset Patriots.

How did the Yankees get so lucky?  T.J. was originally acquired in the 12th round by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 2021 MLB Draft. The Yankees then acquired him via trade from the Phillies in 2021 in exchange for RHP Nick Nelson and C Donny Sands. Rumfield was in the package with LHP Joel Valdez. In 2021, he played in the Arizona Fall League where he hit one homer and collected 10 RBIs with a 1.059 OPS in only 17 games. In 2022, he played High-A with Hudson Valley slashing .284/.381/.411 and .792 OPS over 52 games. T.J. adds depth to Yankees first base, as a lefty hitter with clutch factor. His last homer on June 10th was a tank job, a two-run home run that was hit out TD Bank Ballpark. The future is looking bright for the tall and lanky 23 year-old who we most likely will see in Triple-A soon.
