Princeton earns first Top 10 win since 2021 after win over Georgetown

Going into their second Top-10 matchup in a week, Princeton was looking to bounce back from their 3-0 loss to No. 6 Penn State from last Thursday. The No. 10 Hoyas were coming into this match off a 1-1 tie on Sunday against No. 3 Stanford.

At the first whistle, both teams looked to put the pressure on early, but it was all Tigers to start off the game at Roberts Stadium with Princeton having the first four shots of the game. Princeton’s strong start would pay off, notching two goals in the first frame off of Georgetown's mistakes. The first came at 17:17 when Jen Estes passed a ball into the box that went off a Georgetown defender and into the net. The Hoyas gave the Tigers another gift six minutes later when Madison Curry sent a cross into the box that a Georgetown defender unsuccessfully cleared into her own net. Going into the half the Tigers took the momentum with them and looked to shut the Hoyas down in the final 45.

Georgetown wouldn’t go down without a fight and came out blazing in the second half. Wasting no time, the Hoyas scored in the first five minutes with Kaya Hanson tucking one away in the lower right corner, just managing to get the shot by Tyler McCamey. That wasn’t the last of them as only four minutes later Tatum Lenain sent a beautiful long ball to Natalie Means, who duked out the Princeton defender and placed one in the upper right corner to tie the game up at two and erase the Hoyas first half mistakes.

From this point it was a back and forth battle, both teams looking for the opening to steal one for their team. This moment came for the Tigers at 76:10 when Drew Coomans placed a gorgeous cross into the box that found the sophomore star Pietra Tordin as she headed the ball quickly past Allie Augur scoring her eighth goal of the season, tying her high from last season. The Tigers were able to fend off the Hoyas despite a late strong push, giving them their first top ten win since 2021 when they defeated No. 9 Rutgers in 2021.

The Tigers look to close off their non-conference play on a high note when they face the reigning MAAC champions Quinnipiac University on Sunday afternoon in Connecticut, before they face their first conference game against Cornell on September 23rd at Roberts Stadium.
