Game Preview: Rutgers Scarlet Knights vs. Virginia Tech Hokies

Rutgers Scarlet Knights (2-0) are off to a phenomenal start to their season by winning their first two games in convincing fashion. The first three games for Rutgers have been on their home field and the last of these games will occur on Saturday against Virginia Tech at 3:30 p.m.

Rutgers will look to continue their streak of eight straight non-conference wins with their defense, which has allowed just 14 points through the first two games. There’s been a much larger emphasis on fan engagement this season as fans were encouraged to wear red and arrive early to experience the sights and sounds of the gameday experience. At noon, the Rutgers men's basketball team will have a meet and greet with fans of all ages. Oftentimes, this is paralleled with a parade with music and festivities to help give a memorable experience for all involved.

History Between Rutgers & Virginia Tech

This will be the 16th time that Scarlet Knights and Hokies have met and the ninth time the matchup has taken place in New Jersey. Unfortunately for Rutgers, the Hokies lead the series, 12-3. Prior to Rutgers joining the Big Ten. the programs played once a season (1992-2003) as members of the Big East. The last matchup was the Russell Athletic Bowl in Orlando where the Hokies defeated the Knights on a game-winning field goal, 13-10.

One of the more memorable victories for the Knights was the 1992 Halloween victory. The Knights fell at halftime, 42-23, however managed to complete the comeback and win on a Hail Mary, 49-44. Moving forward, this game can potentially be personal for a few Rutgers players. Naturally, in order to ensure the greatest level of talent for competition, one has to recruit around the country. That said, the Knights have two players that are from Virginia: Robert Longerbeam (Alexandria, VA) and Max Patterson (Arlington, VA).
