Men’s College World Series: Elimination Tuesday

As Elimination Tuesday would have it, two more teams have been eliminated, leaving just four remaining in the College World Series. Those remaining include No. 1 seed Wake Forest, No. 2 seed Florida, unseeded TCU and No. 5 seed LSU.

Game 9: TCU vs. Oral Roberts Summary

On Tuesday, TCU met back up with Game 1 opponent Oral Roberts, this time defeating them 6-1 to advance to the Bracket 1 final where they’ll face the No. 2 seed Florida Gators. RHP Cam Brown and RHP Luke Savage held the Golden Eagles scoreless through the first four innings and relievers Hunger Hodges and Cohen Feser kept things under control from there combining for 4.1 innings pitched and zero runs earned. Leading the charge for the Horned Frogs offense were CF Jr. Elijah Nunez, 1B Jr. Cole Fontenelle, and DH Jr. Kurtis Byrne, who each contributed two hits.

Asked what Oral Roberts’ Coach McMurray would say about the mark ORU left with fans less familiar with the school than their tournament opponents, Coach McMurray responded, "…in terms of gaining national attention, this is probably something that’s going to propel our program for the next 10 to 15 years, I would say. So that’s huge."

TCU’s RHP Cam Brown really set the tone out of the gate for the Horned Frogs, giving up just one hit in three innings pitched.

"Just worrying about executing pitch to pitch. I don’t have to worry about who is hitting .300, .250, .450, whatever it may be, just executing pitch to pitch and trying to give my team the best chance to win is how I tried to go about it today." – TCU RHP Cam Brown in post-game interview

The Horned Frogs face the Florida Gators Wednesday at 2:00PM EDT and will need to beat them twice to advance to the finals. The Frogs have won their last 21 of 24 games and will look to win their first-ever College World Series title, despite having earned the trip to Omaha six times.

Game 10: LSU vs Tennessee Summary

LSU held Tennessee to a scoreless Game 10 on Tuesday to get the 5-0 victory and send the Vols packing. The Tigers LHP Nate Ackenhausen made his first start of the season after 15 relief appearances, and I might add, an incredibly dominant one. Ackenhausen hushed the Vols with six shutout innings and seven K’s.

Asked when he learned he was taking the mound for the Game 10 start, Ackenhausen replied, “Coach texted me at 8:56AM. I didn’t respond until 11:10. I was sleeping in a bit. I think I just texted him, ‘I’ll give it all I’ve got.'"

And that he did.

As for the Tigers’ offense, most of their hits came from three key players: CF Jr. Dylan Crews with two hits, 1B Jr. Tre’ Morgan with two hits, and DH Sr. Cade Beloso.

The Vols had a few golden opportunities that they didn’t capitalize on, including in the fifth when they doubled to left center with one on and held the runner at third with plenty of time to reach home. At that time, they were down just one run.

LSU will face the No. 1 seed Demon Deacons on Wednesday at 7:00PM EDT and will need to take down the Deacons twice to advance to the finals. The Tigers are making their 19th College World Series appearance), their first since 2017 when they lost to Florida in the finals. The Louisiana sluggers will look to win their first national title since 2009 when D.J. LeMahieu (Yankees infielder/utility) and Austin Nola (Padres catcher) were both members of the team.

Next up: Semifinals Wednesday

  • Florida (No. 2 seed) vs TCU – 2:00PM EDT
  • Wake Forest (No. 1 seed) vs. LSU – 7:00PM EDT
