Jets sign big time weapon in receiver Mike Williams

It all started with a sandwich being delivered to Jets headquarters in Florham Park, and now the Jets have signed wide receiver Mike Williams. It has been a big couple of days for New York, first landing All-Pro left tackle Tyron Smith. Now, they added another weapon for Aaron Rodgers in Williams. If this Jets offense stays healthy, it could be a very productive season for New York.

Williams reportedly agreed to a one-year deal worth up to $15 Million. The Los Angeles Chargers released him last week after he tore his ACL in the third week of the 2023 NFL season.

The Jets are getting a talented player who is 29 years old and coming off a significant injury. This signing is risky because Williams has an injury history throughout most of his career.

The Jets are getting a 6'4" physical wide receiver who can put up productive numbers. He can slide right in as the Jets' number two wide receiver on the depth chart and help open space for Garrett Wilson to become even more productive.

Regardless of what you think of Williams, the Jets needed more playmakers. Williams is a more productive weapon than anyone else on their roster besides Wilson.

Remember that it is a one-year deal, which makes the move less risky because there are no long-term ties. If Williams doesn't work out, you just cut your losses after the 2024 season. Having him on a one-year prove-it deal is worth it because if he can stay healthy, he can be a huge factor for this Jets offense.

Another big reason this is a good signing for the Jets is that it makes their decision for the upcoming draft more flexible. The Jets don't need to draft a tackle or a wide receiver now. They can do whatever they feel is best for the team, whether trading back and acquiring more assets or drafting the best player available. The point is that they don't need to settle on one position. They don't desperately need anything anymore. They can choose to do whatever they want in the draft because they were able to fill their most significant holes in free agency.

General Manager Joe Douglas deserves much credit for the fantastic job he has done this offseason. He was patient and stuck to his formula, and in the end, it landed one of the best tackles and wide receivers in this free-agency class.
