Jets Land Starting Right Tackle To Boost Offensive Line

Another day of free agency is finished, and the Jets made two additions on Wednesday. The headliner of the day was the Jets trading for right tackle Morgan Moses from the Baltimore Ravens.

The Jets traded a 2024 fourth-round and sixth-round pick for Moses and a 2024 fourth-round pick.  New York moves back in the pick swap, while Baltimore moves up in the round. Moses will plug right into their starting lineup at right tackle. Which was a significant need for them; Moses spent the 2021 season with the Jets before leaving for Baltimore.

He now returns to be their starting right tackle and, hopefully, a massive improvement for their line. Moses played in 14 games last season for Baltimore. Moses will cost them $5.5 million for the upcoming season.

Moses is considered a good run blocker with Pro Football Focus grades of 77.6 overall, 75.9 pass block, and 77.2 run block last year. Penalties have been a big issue for the Jets in the past. According to Pro Football Reference, Moses comes to the team having only four penalties last season and only 15 penalties over the last three seasons.

He is a short-term fix for New York at right tackle, being under contract for only one more year. He is 33 years old, so you must wonder when he will start to regress. The Jets must hope he can play good football for at least another year.

They also resigned punter Thomas Morstead, who returned on a two-year deal worth over five million. Morstead was one of the Jets’ bright sides in the 2023 season as he led the NFL in punting yards for the season.

Besides Moses and Morstead, the Jets did not make any other moves on Wednesday. They did lose safety Jordan Whitehead, who returned to Tampa Bay. What could happen in the upcoming days for the Jets now they have secured a right tackle?

They could keep pursuing the offensive line market to sign more depth. They could bring in Cowboys tackle Tyron Smith as their starting left tackle. New York has yet to bring in a wide receiver, and recently released Mike Williams would be an excellent option to sign. Other names like Tyler Boyd and Marquez Valdes-Scantling are available to sign. Valdes-Scantling has a history with Aaron Rodgers playing in Green Bay together, so that could be an option for the Jets.

The Jets will need to find an answer for the wide receiver position, whether that is signing or trading for someone. They have the 10th pick in the upcoming draft, where you would assume they are looking at offensive line or wide receiver. Either way, this offseason should be nowhere near done for New York who look to find a championship team for next season.
