Rutgers women’s soccer picks up huge victory over Purdue

The Scarlet Knights powered through the rain Sunday afternoon to capture a crucial match to stay above .500 on the year. The 1-0 victory over Purdue was a must win for the Scarlet Knights season as Rutgers is now 1-2 in conference play and tied ninth place (14 teams) in Big Ten standings

Rutgers vs. Purdue Recap

The Scarlet Knights wasted no time getting on the board Sunday afternoon, as less than 90 seconds into the match Rutgers found themselves with the 1-0 lead. With a corner kick opportunity, Riley Tiernan capitalized as she sent a nice ball into the box. The ball found Emily Mason on the right side of the net, who finished it for the score.

The early score was the only one in the entire match for both teams, despite a large amount of offensive action. Purdue may not have put one in the back of the net, but they still had a lot of great opportunities.

The Boilermakers had the advantage in shots with 19, but only landed six on net. Luckily for the Scarlet Knights, Olivia Bodmer was stellar in net as she recorded six saves in the match, including this incredible driving one handed stop in the second half.

The defense was the star of the show hands down as the Scarlet Knights shut down the Boilermaker’s offense. Despite trailing in shots and registering more fouls Rutgers was able to grind out a very important win on their home turf.

As the season slowly dwindles down Rutgers has less and less opportunities to make a run for postseason play. Every single game counts, so when the wins do come they need to be celebrated and recognized.

With only seven games left, all being Big Ten, the time is now for the Scarlet Knights to build off of a clutch victory. The Scarlet Knights will look to capture their first win on the road this season against the 7-2-2 Cornhuskers.
