Top 5 Takeaways from Day 1 of New York Giants Training Camp

Day 1 of New York Giants Training Camp is in the books and Jersey Sporting News was on scene covering all the action. Here are our Top 5 Takeaways...

Just The Facts Ma’am - When General Manager Joe Schoen was asked about the reports that were circling around about Barkley wanting a trade he said, “We never had a conversation about trading Saquon Barkley. Never.”  Schoen added, “We get calls all the time. We've already gotten them this offseason, whether it's our 10th corner, “Hey, we need a corner,” any of your back-end guys, or one of your top guys. We get those calls all the time. Even in June, we got some of those calls in June. So, teams call all the time just inquiring. Schoen ends the answer with a very adamant, “No. Not one time (have we had a conversation about trading Barkley)." And there you have it folks, the Giants did not sign Barkley to trade him, and this GM means it.

Speaking of Saquon -  He sure was shining bright on Day 1. During red zone drills, a Jones to Barkley connection resulted in a TD and the crowd lost their collective minds. I think it was a much-needed release! It was all business for Barkley for the rest of the day. Catching passes over the middle and making plays. Barkley looks like he hasn’t missed a beat.

I Got 99 Problems and Darren Waller is One of Them -  If you follow my Giants content on social media then you know I was all aboard the Darren Waller train back in March. In fact, the day he was signed, I made a public statement saying he was a big, fast, fantastic route runner and that he’s going to open the offense up and be a problem for opposing defenses. While my claims were met with criticism watching him today in camp only validated what I have been saying since the Spring. Darren Waller is a problem. Waller is 6’6 and was making life difficult for the linebackers who were trying to cover him. He grabs anything and everything that’s thrown his way due to his catch radius which is in the 96th percentile. He excels at getting his body between the defender and the ball which he hardly drops. He is exactly what the Giants and your Fantasy Football team need. You’re welcome.

Daniel Jones Swag -  Or new money swag as some of his teammates called it during OTA’s. Daniel Jones was on the money and looked laser focused. During team drills, he had his way with the defense and threw TD’s to Barkley, Waller and Parris Campbell. Jones is noticeably more confident and takes command of the offense. I attribute that to continuity and knowing Brian Daboll’s system. As Jones said on Wednesday. “It’s nice not to be learning completely new at this point.”

Brian Dabolls Message To The Team - Wednesday marked the first day of the 2023 season and Brian Daboll told the team to ,“Go out there and compete. There's going to be a lot of mistakes that’ll be made. We're going to try to put you in difficult situations; move on to the next play as quick as you can. Support your teammates. Go out there and play as hard and smart as you can. Let's just take it day by day and get better each day.” Daboll also said he doesn’t talk too much the first few days of camp because there’s a lot of anxiety for the players. If it’s one thing we have learned, it’s that Daboll respects his players, puts them first and supports them in any way that he can.
