New Jersey Natives Tolkin and Edelman Make MLS 22 Under 22 List

Major League Soccer released its annual 22 Under 22 list, ranking the top 22 players around the league under the age of 22. The New York Red Bulls have two on the list this year, both homegrown players.

New Jersey natives John Tolkin and Daniel Edelman were named to the 2023 MLS 22 Under 22 List after their exceptional season—a well-deserved honor for both players.

John Tolkin
The Chatham, NJ native made the list for the second straight season. Tolkin, 21, earned the same ranking as last year at number six. He appeared in 26 MLS matches this season, recording two goals and six assists. Across all competitions, Tolkin had eight assists which broke the franchise record for most assists by a defender in a season. The young defender was named to the MLS All-Star roster for the first time in his career and was called up to the senior United States Men’s National Team for the first time. Tolkin is the second homegrown Red Bulls player to ever be named an All-Star. A bright future is ahead for the young defender.

Daniel Edelman
The 20-year-old native from Warren, NJ made the 22 Under 22 List for the first time in his career landing in the 21st spot. Edelman was also captain of the U-20 US Men’s National Team this year for the 2023 U-20 FIFA World Cup in Argentina. The young midfielder appeared in 25 MLS matches this season and recorded one goal and one assist. With one more year of eligibility, Edelman surely looks to make the list again next year, hopefully in a higher spot.
