Montclair Men's Soccer Cruises Past Rutgers-Newark

A cool October night in Montclair saw the Montclair State Red Hawks take on the Rutgers-Newark Scarlet Raiders. Montclair comes into this game rolling as the number three ranked team and a record of 10-1-1.

The Red Hawks struck early and often once again in this matchup. Just a little over seven minutes in, Andre Shelton was able to put the ball in the back of the net on a feed from Amer Lukovic and Montclair was off and running. Not even 12 seconds later, Lukovic was able to get on the board himself burying a goal passed the Rutgers keeper and it was 2-0 Hawks.

A few minutes later, Lukovic almost scored again. An acrobatic bicycle kick through salad just right off the net. Ten minutes later, Owen Murphy rocketed a ball off the crossbar as the Red Hawks kept putting the ball on goal.

Alfredo Rojas broke through in the 39th minute of the game. When Rutgers could not clear the ball after a Red Hawk corner, Rojas launched a missile that flew by the keeper to put Montclair in a commanding 3-0 lead.

Montclair was able to hold off the Scarlet Raiders in the second half with Shane Keenan coming up with big saves to keep them off the board. Lukovic would notch his second goal of the game later on in the 63rd minute to put the game to bed.  The Red Hawks went on to win 4-0 and advanced to 11-1-1 on the year.

Lukovic’s two goals put him at 20 on the year. The Red Hawks will travel to TCNJ on Saturday and look to get their 12th win of the year.
