New York falls short of comeback bid in loss to Montreal

Tuesday night continued PWHL New York’s road trip, which saw them visit PWHL Montreal. The last time these two faced off against each other was just six days ago, where Montreal ran away with the 5-2 victory. Coming into tonight’s matchup, New York was looking to build off of Sunday’s win as well as avenge themselves from the previous time they played Montreal.

The first period started off like many first periods New York has had this season with their opponents coming out blazing while, they are still waking up. Despite their slow start, they found their footing and were able to generate a few opportunities of their own. Momentum would swing back in full force in favor of Montreal in the last five minutes of the period as they would score twice in 17 seconds.

The first goal was scored by #8 Gabrielle David, who put one in after a behind the net pass from #14 Jillian Dempsey. Montreal’s second goal came from #12 Leah Lum, who blasted one past goaltender #39 Abigail Levy. Heading into the first intermission, New York once again dug themselves a two goal deficit after another first period of being outplayed.

The second period was also in true New York fashion as in this period, they were the ones who came out blazing. The intensity in the game also started to heat up as both sides started to become very chippy with each other, leading to penalties being called on both sides. During the 4-on-4 Montreal would take another penalty, giving New York the 4-on-3 advantage.

In recent games, the power play for New York has produced when needed to and did so once again in this game as #14 Jamie Bourbonnais rocketed the puck right past #35 Ann-Renée Desbiens after #17 Ella Shelton faked a shot, throwing off the Montreal defense which generated the goal-scoring opportunity. Both sides would get their fair share of opportunities before the period ended, but neither side could capitalize and Montreal had the lead heading into the third period.

New York built on the momentum they generated in the second period which helped them to tie the game up just 11 seconds into the period. The opportunity was made possible after #25 Alex Carpenter cleanly won the faceoff to #9 Jessie Eldridge who then sniped the puck past Desbiens. As the period went on, New York began to hurt themselves taking two penalties in a matter of seconds, giving Montreal a 5-on-3 advantage.

While New York killed both penalties, Montreal was able to create momentum which carried them to breaking the tie with less than 10 minutes to go. #29 Marie-Philip Poulin put away a beautiful cross crease feed from #15 Maureen Murphy which sent the crowd in Montreal to their feet.

New York would get an opportunity to tie the game up once again after Montreal took an elbowing penalty, but New York would ruin the opportunity for themselves when #67 Emma Woods took a goaltender interference penalty. They would fall just short of the comeback as Poulin’s goal became the game winner.

New York continues their road trip Saturday afternoon where they’ll play a matinee matchup against Boston and where they’ll look to pick up an important win.
