Newcastle United survives in thriller against Brighton & Hove Albion

On Friday night, Red Bull Arena hosted Newcastle United and Brighton & Hove Albion. Early in the match, there was a ton of excitement and energy from the fans and supporters, which was maintained throughout the majority of the game. Through the first 60 minutes, both teams appeared to be evenly matched. Although several opportunities were presented for both teams, they both struggled to capitalize as the scoreless game drained both teams.

As the game progressed, it appeared Brighton began to look to build momentum. The momentum helped carry over and led to a breakaway goal by Brighton striker Danny Welbeck to make the score 1-0 within the opening minutes of the second half. Brighton began attempting to put the game away and continued to be aggressive, however Newcastle began intensifying their play. Throughout the game, fatigue appeared to play a factor for Brighton as many players were subbed out during the second half.

Fortunately, for Newcastle, the fatigue began allowed them to get back into this game within the final minutes. In the 86th minute, Newcastle striker Elliot Anderson found a golden opportunity to capitalize and tied the game, 1-1.

Nevertheless, minutes later, Anderson found himself putting the ball through the net on a play he never gave up on. Many of  Brighton’s players appeared to be confused as he slid, but the ball was never out of bounds. Anderson understood this and fully took advantage leaving the goalie vulnerable, ultimately giving Newcastle the lead and victory of the contest, 2-1.

How Does the Premier League Summer Series Work?
