Patriots' Immaculate Series sets them up for Playoffs

Bridgewater, NJ -- The Somerset Patriots played the Toronto Blue Jays Double-A affiliate, the New Hampshire Fisher Cats, on the road this past week. The Patriots won the series in dominant fashion taking five out of six games. Patriots recorded two immaculate innings from Matt Sauer and Carlos Gomez and offense also came to play, scoring 29 runs in the series. Outfielders Spencer Jones and Grant Richardson each hit two home runs.

Game 1 (Sept 12): 3-2 W - The Patriots defeated the Fisher Cats on Tuesday with Sauer's fifth win of the season, allowing only three hits of the game. Gomez pitched an immaculate game coming in the sixth inning. He tied a season-high four strikeouts and held the game after the two runs scored for the Fisher Cats. Tanner Myatt followed from the pen with the save with four strikeouts and a five out save for the Somerset Patriots. Offense received production from Elijah Dunham with multiple hits and RBI's. Richardson also got on base with a hit to extend his on-base streak with 10 games.

Game 2 (Sept 13): 5-1 L  - Terrible loss for the Patriots. Jeisson Rosario plated the only run of the game.

Rosario: 1-3, 1 RBI

Trey Sweeney: 3-5, 2B

Game 3 (Sept 14): 6-2 W - The  Patriots' bats came alive on game three of the series with fresh new arms from Zach Messinger and  Harrison Cohen. Messinger received a no decision on his debut. Ryan Anderson earned the win and third of the season. Cohen earned a seven-out save to end and allowed only one baserunner on his debut with Somerset. Richardson has been hot for the Patriots with his fifth multi-hit game and gave the Patriots the lead with a solo shot in the fourth hitting.

Anderson: 2.1 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 3 SO

Game 4 (Sept 15): 3-2 W - Richard Fitts was absolutely magical for the Patriots. He struck out 11 batters for a career-high in this game for his final start of the regular season. Fitts also collected 11 wins this season striking out a total of 163 batters.

Game 5 (Sept 16): 8-3 W - Yoendrys Gomez delivered a remarkable GEM on game 5 to give the Patriots their 83rd win of the season. Gomez ended his regular season with a career-high innings pitched (65.1) and strikeouts (78). The offense was alive and all nine batters collected hits this game.

Richardson had a great series hitting safely in four out of the five games he played. He went 6-for-18 with two home runs and five RBIs. Richardson has been hot since his call up to Double-A with five home runs and an OPS of 1.068 in 15 games. His season stats with Hudson Valley and Somerset are 18 home runs, 48 RBI, 19 stolen bases and an OPS of .757. He’s played all three outfield positions and thrown out four runners this season. In 15 Double-A games, Richardson was slashing .340/.426/.642 with 5 HR, 11 RBI, 10 R, 6 BB and 5 SB.

Game 6 (Sept 17): 8-1 W - The Patriots defeated the Fisher Cats to complete a regular season record of 84-53, one more win than their 2022 regular season record. Sauer earned the win, pitching an immaculate inning and striking out three batters on nine pitches. He was was lights out and pitched 11.1 innings giving up two runs and striking out 13 batters this series. His ERA was 1.62 for the series and is 3.41 on the season. He’s pitched 74 innings with 93 strikeouts and a WHIP off 1.15. Sauer is the Yankees 25th ranked prospect on MLB Pipeline.

Jones was on fire hitting 3-5, 2 RBI, and a home run this game registering his third straight multi-hit game. Jones had a great series with two home runs, five RBI and three stolen bases. Jones has been on a tear his last ten games with a batting average of .357 and OPS of .947.

Ben Rice continued to crush the ball and hit his 16th home run in Double-A and 20th overall. He has collected 20 home runs in less than 75 games this season.

The Patriots will now carry the momentum of this series win into the Playoffs. Their regular season was impressive with a franchise-record 84 wins, which lead all of Double-A. Their run differential of +211 was also the best in Double-A. The Patriots (84-53) will begin a best two out of three series in the Eastern League semi-finals tomorrow. Patriots will take on the Mets Double-A affiliate, Binghamton Rumble Ponies in Binghamton.
