New York Yankees right-hand reliever Jimmy Cordero is being suspended for the remainder of the 2023 season for violating the MLB’s Joint Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault and Child Abuse Policy.
MLB Commissioner Robert D Manfred Jr. announced the suspension Wednesday morning, saying that the decision was made following an internal investigation.
Cordero, who accepted the suspension was immediately placed on the restricted list and will have to participate in a confidential and comprehensive evaluation and treatment program that will be supervised by the Joint Policy Board.
It hasn’t been specified what exactly happened that led to the decision from the MLB, but clearly it was very serious since Cordero received such a significant time of suspension. It can also be assumed that the suspected actions are true since Cordero did not argue the suspension.
The Yankees released a statement following the MLB’s announcement, expressing their support of the league's decision and their stance on Domestic Violence.
“The Yankees are fully supportive of Major League Baseball’s investigative process and the disciplinary action applied to Jimmy Cordero. There is no justification for domestic violence, and we stand with the objectives, standards and enforcement of MLB’s Joint Domestic Violence, Sexual Assault and Child Abuse Policy.”
During Wednesday afternoon’s press conference, Yankees Manager Aaron Boone told the media that he received the news of Cordero’s suspension the night before. Boone also said that Cordero approached him a few days prior giving him a “heads up” about an investigation that was taking place.

Boone shared some more thoughts on the situation regarding how the suspension affects the clubhouse and how he hopes that something can be “learned” from it.
"You get that news or you hear about that and it's sad. Your heart goes out to everyone involved"

Yankees Captain, Aaron Judge had a few heartfelt words on the situation when asked by the media before Wednesday’s game.
"It's just a sad situation, just thinking about Cordero's family and his wife and kids. It's a tough situation that you never, never want anybody to go through."

Cordero, who has been a key reliever for the Yankees this season, is going to be a big loss for one of the best bullpens in baseball. Cordero has appeared in 31 games this season with an ERA of 3.86 and a WHIP of 1.071, while recording 34 strikeouts.
Cordero is not the first Yankee to have Domestic Violence issues as Domingo Germán and Aroldis Chapman both faced suspensions for the matter. Germán back in 2020 received one of the lengthiest punishments for the violation, being suspended for 81 games. Chapman only received a 30 game suspension back in 2016.
The suspension of Cordero only adds to the Yankees problems this season as they are losing guys left and right to poor off field choices and injuries.
In response to Cordero being unavailable for the rest of the season the Yankees recalled RHP Randy Vásquez from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Vazquez will start Wednesday night's game against the Baltimore Orioles.
