Rutgers Field Hockey Rolls Over Monmouth To Move To 12-0

The Scarlet Knights continued to defend their home turf as they took down in-state rival Monmouth 4-2. In the battle of Jersey, Rutgers came out of the first half with a 1-0 lead, but two scores in the fourth quarter propelled the Scarlet Knights to victory.

Rutgers goaltender Sophia Howard had a huge day in net with seven saves on the afternoon. Between the offensive opportunities and defensive stops, Rutgers was able to get the job done once again.

Scoring Recap

The Scarlet Knights got the scoring started 17 minutes into the match off of a nice finish right in front of the net by Guillermina Causarano.

The Scarlet Knights picked the scoring back up in the third quarter (32:36) off of a nice backhand pass to Marique Dieudonne, who quick touched it into the net.

Exactly three minutes later, Monmouth finally responded to the Scarlet Knights 2-0 run with a score of their own. A nice speedy shot by Sofia Fouces, Monmouth's leading scorer. Less than 10 minutes later, Monmouth tied the match 2-2 off of a penalty corner after a goal from Jess Tucker. The Jersey rivals found themselves heading into the fourth with a tied match.

Thankfully, Rutgers found their groove again as they scored twice in two minutes. Off of a penalty corner, Bridy Molyneaux started the scoring streak with a nice finish to the bottom right of the net.

The second score of the streak came courtesy of Julianne Kopec who corralled a save in front of the net for the finish. Just like that, the Scarlet Knights had a 4-2 lead and all the momentum on their side.

Breaking it Down

Both teams saw a ton of offensive action Sunday afternoon as the Scarlet Knights released 19 shots (12 on goal), while Monmouth had 10 shots (nine on goal). On top of the shot advantage, Rutgers had a 4-3 edge on penalty corners.

The name of the game for the Scarlet Knights is consistency and execution throughout the match. If Rutgers could have finished a few more of the shots they had, this would have been a blowout win for them, instead it was a "on the edge of your seat" kind of game.

Rutgers has a huge test coming up this Friday as they face #7 Ohio State in Columbus. A top ten matchup that will surely not disappoint.
