Job purpose
Jersey Sporting News (JSN) is in search of qualified reporters with an interest in covering local news and sports in the community and surrounding areas.
With a focus on sports throughout New Jersey, reporters must have vast knowledge of the athletics landscape throughout the state. All work is done remotely as we do not have a central headquarters. We strive to provide our readers with engaging and up-to-date sports content via game coverage as well as feature stories and interviews.
Expectations
The ideal candidate would be an enthusiastic, detailed and dynamic leader, with the ability to report and publish high school sports content on JSN. The journalist must embrace social media, including digital and video components. This position will lead a group of writers covering high school sports throughout the state of New Jersey.
Content Leads will become the community’s leading voice in area of high school sports. They will produce their own content as well as lead a group of peers in creating ideas and putting those ideas into action. The Content Lead will assist in editing and publishing content when needed. They are responsible for making sure their category maintains a consistent content flow.
Content Leads will also be responsible for assisting in posting to JSN social media accounts and recruitment of new writers, when needed.
Candidates should have extensive ability to work both independently as well as leading a group of peers.
Qualifications
Interested candidates must meet the following criteria to be eligible for this position:
Previous news or sports writing experience preferred, but not required. Students welcome.
Extensive knowledge of the high school sports landscape in New Jersey.
Excellent writing, editing, and organizational skills.
Self-starter who can take direction and contribute ideas for stories.
The ability to work quickly and independently on projects while meeting deadlines.
Community development knowledge/experience a plus.
Communication skills with the ability to lead a small group
