Rutgers women's soccer blanks Michigan for third Big Ten win

The Rutgers Scarlet Knights were ready to play on Thursday night as they blanked Michigan, 2-0. The entire match was close, competitive and physical, until the Scarlet Knights put two on the board in less than a minute. The win is Rutgers' second straight victory and third in the Big Ten. The Scarlet Knights looked quick and sharp "On the Banks" as they continued to make a late season push.

Scoring Recap

The Scarlet Knights broke the standstill in the 68th minute off of a nice finish by Kylie Daigle. A beautifully placed pass by Becci Fluchel led Daigle into open space, allowing Daigle to rip one into the back of the net.

Less than a minute later the Scarlet Knights added on to their lead. Riley Tiernan got tripped up inside of the Wolverines' box to set up a penalty kick for Rutgers. Tiernan stepped up and buried it. In the blink of an eye the scarlet Knights were up 2-0 with total control of the match.

Michigan couldn't find the back of the net before the end of regulation, however, the Wolverines were close. In the 76th minute Michigan almost got within one but Rutgers caught a lucky break and bounce off the post.

Breaking it down

Across the board it was a pretty even match between these two Big Ten foes. Rutgers had a one shot advantage over Michigan, but the Wolverines had control of the rest of the stat box. Michigan had a 4-3 save advantage, 8-5 corner advantage, and 17-11 foul advantage.

A mentioned it was an extremely physical match with lots of whistles and fouls, but what else could one expect between these two teams fighting for every win they can get.

With this victory Rutgers moves to 7-5-3 overall and 3-3-1 in conference. Michigan on the other hand drops to 7-4-3 overall and 3-3-1 in conference. Rutgers is currently tied for sixth place in the Big Ten standings with Michigan and Ohio State.

Rutgers needs to take all the momentum they can from this victory as they face No. 20 Michigan State on Sunday. It will be huge battle for the Scarlet Knights as they look to keep climbing up the standings.
