Three PWHL NY Players to Play in Showcase at NHL All-Star Game

On the month anniversary of the inaugural game of the Professional Women's Hockey League (PWHL), the stars of the league will play a 3-on-3 Showcase as part of the NHL All-Star Weekend.

Twenty-four of the league's best players were chosen on January 15th. Twelve will play for Team Kloss and the other twelve for Team King; named after two important women who helped to create the PWHL, Billie Jean King and Ilana Kloss.

Three of the twenty-four players are from PWHL NY, forwards Alex Carpenter and Abby Roque as well as defender Ella Shelton. Continue reading on to learn more about NY’s three All-Stars and what makes them shine!

#25 Alex Carpenter

Carpenter is one of the most decorated players in women’s hockey. The Massachusetts native is a graduate from Boston College and played in 150 games for the Eagles and most certainly left her mark as she holds all-time records in multiple categories. The veteran is also a 2-time member of the USA Olympic team notching the silver medal in both 2014 and 2022 and most recently helped the stars and stripes win a gold medal in the 2023 tournament.

Carpenter's presence on the ice has been dominant for New York in the 8 games she has played this season as she has registered at least one point in 7 out of the 9 games. It’s as if the puck has a magnet to Carpenter’s stick as she is always finding herself in the right positions to make a goal scoring play and is the reason why she is a point per game player so far in the PWHL. Fans should be excited about the offensive talent Carpenter brings to the showcase and be ready for her to generate an offensive push any time she touches the ice for Team Kloss.

#11 Abby Roque

Roque is a Michigan native and spent her collegiate career as a Wisconsin Badger where she played in 155 games and was a point per game player. Roque is also a member of the US national team and appeared in the 2022 Olympic games as well as the last three world championships. Like Carpenter, Roque is another playmaker for PWHL NY and has been a major addition to this team. While Roque may be having a slow start on the score sheet (three points in nine games), her ability to dominate in all three zones makes her an obvious choice to be an All-Star.

While she only stands at 5-foot-3, Roque uses every inch to play an aggressive style of hockey and protect the puck, which allows her to set teammates up for scoring opportunities. Roque is a player that will make her presence known to her opponents and fans should especially be on the lookout for the connection she has with fellow teammate Carpenter as they are reunited once again on Team Kloss at the PWHL 3-on-3 Showcase.

#17 Ella Shelton

Shelton is another Ontario native on this team as well as another graduate of the Clarkson University women’s hockey team where she played in 153 games and made a name for herself across the nation as one of the best two-way defenders. Shelton is also a member of the Canadian national team and played in the last Winter Olympics as well as the last three world championships. So far this season, Shelton has brought an arsenal of skill and leadership to PWHL NY and is turning into one of the top defenders in the league.

The left-handed shot has lived up to the hype so far this season, boosting New York’s offense. Shelton leads the league in points by a defenseman (eight) and goals (three). She is tied for third with Minnesota’s Grace Zumwinkle for points among all PWHL skaters. Shelton has put on a show on the defensive side, making key defensive plays to keep New York in the game. In the 3-on-3 showcase, Shelton will be a player that Team King will rely heavily on if they want to beat Team Kloss as her two-way style and leadership will play a crucial factor in the outcome.

The PWHL 3-on-3 Showcase will air tonight directly following the NHL All-Star draft which is set to take place at 6PM EST.
