Scarlet Knights defeat Holy Cross in women's soccer season opener

PISCATAWAY, NJ - Rutgers Scarlet Knights women's soccer defeated Holy Cross Thursday in their 2023 season premiere.

It didn’t take long for the Scarlet Knights to get on the board. In the 5th minute of the game, Holy Cross’ goalie blocks a free kick that falls into the feet of Riley Tiernan where she does not hesitate to bury the rebound past the goalie who is on the floor. Rutgers dominated with possession of the ball, getting past the Holy Cross defense with ease.

A penalty kick was awarded to Allison Lowrey and the ball hit the back of the net sending the Holy Cross keeper the wrong way. Rutgers defense applied pressure making it nearly impossible for Holy Cross to get on the board.

After a scoreless first half, Holy Cross attempted to bring their lines forward but it was still not enough to make any changes to the score. Rutgers was awarded a second penalty kick but it was saved by the diving Holy Cross goalie.

Rutgers keeper Olivia Bodmer made two saves while Holy Cross keeper Mackenzie Wagner had eight. Holy Cross began to leave gaps defensively, and Rutgers took advantage and still had the majority of possession.

The Scarlet Knights are off to a great start to their 2023 season with this 2-0 win. They return to action on Sunday at Yurcak Field when they take on Hofstra at 7 p.m.
