USWNT team roster is missing a key emerging Gotham FC player

Five NJ/NY Gotham FC players have been called up to the USWNT roster, tied for the most from any team in the NWSL. However, one of Gotham's best players, Lynn Williams, is missing from the roster.

Emily Sonnett, Tierna Davidson, Crystal Dunn, Rose Lavelle, and Jenna Nighswonger were all called up for the USWNT's upcoming friendlies. There is a glaring omission from the roster in Lynn Williams, who had gotten back from injury more than a month ago. Since returning from injury, Williams has scored three goals in seven matches.

In Gotham's 2-1 win over Chicago Red Stars this past weekend, Williams became the National Women's Soccer League's all-time leading scorer in all competitions. She had scored her 79th goal, beating out Sam Kerr's previous record of 78 set seven years ago. Over the last year, since signing with Gotham, Williams has scored 13 across all competitions.

This USWNT roster for the two upcoming friendlies marks the first roster of new head coach Emma Hayes since joining the team. Coach Hayes has opted for a younger roster, with Alex Morgan, Casey Krueger, Aubrey Kingsbury, and Crystal Dunn being the only players in their thirties.

Williams, who is also in her thirties, would be able to provide a more veteran presence on a young team. Though Williams has limited national team experience, she can bring a spark to a young team.

Williams has much to boast about as an NWSL champion and the league's leading scorer. Adding more National Team experience could also help Gotham, who will get even more competitive chances to play. The roster that was announced for the USWNT is a pre-Olympics roster, so all is not set in stone for the Games. With the Olympics two months away, Williams gets to show why she deserves to be on Team USA's roster. If she can keep up her recent run of form, she may give Coach Hayes something to think about.

Gotham FC plays their match away at Bay FC on the West Coast as they look to extend their unbeaten run. The game is at 10 p.m. on Amazon Prime.
