Seton Hall Holds Off Late Georgetown Rally 76-70

The Seton Hall Pirates squared off against the Georgetown Hoyas Wednesday night in a Big East showdown. The Hoyas came into the game with only 8 wins this year and 1-9 in conference play. It was the perfect matchup on paper to get the Pirates back on track after losing three of their last four games. They were able to get back on track as Seton Hall pulled out a 76-70 victory.

The first half started with both teams burying threes to get the game off and running. Georgetown’s interior defense seemed to be lacking, with the Pirates scoring in the paint and being able to grab offensive boards and convert on second-chance efforts. Leading the way in the first half for Seton Hall was senior guard Dre Davis. Davis, coming off a week that he was named Big East Player of the Week, attacked the rim, scoring 15 points and hauling in four boards in the first half alone.

Davis and Kadary Richmond paced the Pirates to a 38-33 lead heading into the half. For Georgetown, Dontrez Styles led the way with 16 points.

Coming out of the break, the Pirates needed to put away a team that they absolutely should beat. Richmond came out with a different jersey due to his regular one being ripped at the end of the first half. He was blanketed by the Hoya defense all night, but was still able to finish the game with 20 points.

Al-Amir Dawes was strong defensively against Georgetown’s Jayden Epps who went off last time these two met for 30 points. Dawes held Epps to just 15 points on the night and was big defensively down the stretch.

Seton Hall led by as much as 11 entering the final minutes of the 2nd half, but could not put the Hoyas away. Georgetown creeped to within five points but clutch Free-Throw shooting sealed the game for the Pirates 76-70.

Player of the game for the Hall was easily Davis, who finished the game with a double-double with 25 points and 10 boards. It wasn’t a pretty win, but Holloway will take it as its his 18th Big East win in two years.

The Pirates will travel to Villanova on Super Bowl Sunday for huge road matchup against the Wildcats.
