New York Yankees Rehab Assignments and Injury Updates

BRONX, NY — The New York Yankees are off to an excellent start to the season, winning seven straight games and sweeping the Chicago White Sox. The Yankees' record stands at 33-16, and they are leading the AL East. With the additions of Juan Soto, Marcus Stroman, and Alex Verdugo, the team has a fresh outlook and turned the page in 2023. DJ LeMahieu, Tommy Kahnle, and Jasson Domínguez want to join the action.

On Tuesday, the Yankees transferred the following rehab assignments: DJ LeMahieu, after rehabbing with the Somerset Patriots, was sent to Hudson Valley, and Tommy Kahnle continues to rehab with Somerset. Oswald Peraza was transferred to RailRiders on May 20 and recently announced that Jasson Dominguez is having his rehab transferred from Tampa Tarpons to Somerset Patriots.

Jasson Domínguez was activated on May 14 to begin his 20-day rehab window after Tommy John Surgery on September 20, 2023. Dominguez started with the Tampa Tarpons and played four games with them last week. He was the designated hitter and got 13 at-bats. Per Boone, Jasson will be DH'ing. “He’s in the first days of spring training games, and for the first couple of weeks, he’s just going to be DHing. Let’s get out of his way right now. Get him right, play, and get him the regular reps, and then we’ll see where we are." Dominguez hit the ball hard, ripping a single at 111 MPH and an RBI double at 106.5 MPH. He had five hits, one double, one RBI, four walks, and batting .385. The Yankees DH him for two weeks, and he will continue building up his strength in the minors to get his throwing arm into regular-season playing shape. Once his 20-day rehab assignment ends on June 4, He will be optioned to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

Oswald Peraza strained his shoulder in Spring Training and was in pain after throwing the ball during a game on March 6. He did not play the rest of Sprint Training and was placed on the injured list to start the season. Peraza played five games with the Patriots last week. Three of his games were at shortstop, and he was the designated hitter in the other two games. Peraza hit two home runs, two RBI, two stolen bases, and four walks in 16 at-bats with the Patriots. Peraza was sent up to Triple-A with the RailRiders. The Yankees announced that his rehab is over, and he will stay with the RailRiders.

Tommy Kahnle got injured at the end of September last season with right shoulder inflammation and was placed on the IL on September 25. Kahnle was behind schedule during Spring Training, and the Yankees decided not to rush him for Opening Day. He started his rehab with the Tampa Tarpons on May 8 and was transferred to the Somerset on May 14. Kahnle pitched three scoreless innings with eight strikeouts during his rehab stint in Somerset. He was perfect and did not allow a walk or hit to any of the nine batters he faced. Per Aaron Boone, Kahnle is expected to rejoin the Yankees on Wednesday, May 22. A very much needed arm the Yankees need back in their bullpen.

DJ LeMahieu fouled a ball off his right foot in Spring Training and suffered a foot contusion. LeMahieu played his last Spring Training game on March 16. He opened the season on the IL and initially tried to rehab on April 23 with the Patriots but could not finish the game. LeMahieu did not play in another rehab game until May 17, when he returned with the Patriots. In three rehab games with Somerset, DJ hit .500 and went 2-for-4 with an RBI and three walks. He recorded two hits, one RBI, and three walks in four at-bats. On Tuesday, DJ went 1-3 with an RBI single for the Hudson Valley Renegades. Boone said LeMahieu will start at third base and play most of his games there when he returns to the Yankees. Aaron Boone said DJ LeMahieu is expected to receive the most playing time over Jon Berti and Oswaldo Cabrera at third base. Per Bryan Hoch.
