New York Liberty Bounce Back

On Wednesday, May 29, the New York Liberty bounced back from their recent losing streak by defeating the Phoenix Mercury 81-78 at Barclays Center in Brooklyn. The win pushes New York to 5-2 on the season and makes this the 4th consecutive matchup the Liberty has won against the Mercury.

While New York maintained a consistent 8-10 point lead for a majority of the game, Phoenix was able to take a brief advantage in the 3rd quarter. However, the Liberty regained control of the game in the fourth and final quarter, never looking back and grabbing the victory.

Sabrina Ionescu was New York's leading offensive scorer with 22 points, including four three-pointers to add to her streak of regular season games with at least one made three-pointer to 32 total, which is the longest active streak in the WNBA

New York’s bounce back was a true team effort with Jonquel Jones scoring 10 of her 20 points in the fourth quarter and shooting 63% from the field. Breanna Stewart had 13 points and eight rebounds while Betnijah Laney-Hamilton scored 15 points and Courtney Vandersloot finished with six points and two blocks on Wednesday.

In her post-game press conference, Jones was asked how New York was able to “flip the switch” after being down in the third quarter. She said they, “had a different level of intention and changed their mindset.”

Wise words for all of us!

The New York Liberty will continue to defend their home court on Friday night when they take on the Washington Mystics at 7:30PM.
