Bridgewater Panthers County Tournament Final

Lakeland wins Passaic County Baseball Championship

The Passaic County Baseball Championship took place Monday night at Hinchcliffe Stadium in Paterson. The third-seeded Pompton Lakes Cardinals took on the fourth-seeded Lakeland Lancers.

Lakeland defeated top seed DePaul in the semifinals 8-2 to advance to the championship. Meanwhile, Pompton Lakes defeated seven-seed Wayne Valley, who upset Wayne Hills 12-1 to advance to the finals.

The Lancers pulled off the win, defeating the Cardinals 4-1. The game was sealed from the very first inning, as the Lancers got hot early, scoring all four runs in the opening inning.

Leadoff hitter Rowan Conway got on base to start the game, setting up Mickey Gilligan to blast a two-run home run to put the Lancers up immediately. Anthony Degiglio came up with a runner on base and hit the second home run of the inning to put the Lancers up 4-0.

Ken Manning was on the mound for the Lancers. He was dealing, allowing one run, striking out six over 5 1/3 innings, and giving up one run in the game with six strikeouts. Anthony Iasiello came in the game to close it out, and he did that, just letting up one hit for the last 1 2/3 innings.

For the Cardinals, outside of the disastrous first inning, they played a clean game on defense. The only issue was that they could not find their bats to return to the game. The Cardinals did have one more hit than the Lancers but could not turn it into runs.

Their one run came in the sixth inning when Tyler Benway knocked it in with an RBI double. Nick Laccitiello scored the lone run for the Cardinals.

Benway was also on the mound for Pompton Lakes. He got past the first inning, shut out the Lancers the rest of the way, and had six strikeouts.

The Lakeland Lancers can now celebrate as the 2024 Passaic County Baseball Champions.
