What’s Next for Shakur Stevenson After Defeating Artem?

Heading into this fight, many were anticipating Shakur Stevenson’s huge coming-out party to make up for his lackluster performance and make a statement with the world watching. Last year, Stevenson publicly apologized. Many feel that Stevenson fell short of the mark again. However, boxing purists appear to truly appreciate the performance. That said, a ton was at stake for Stevenson, including his promotion team. Some believe this fight would have solidified his opportunity to land a fight with undisputed champion Gervonta Davis and landed a new promoter moving forward. Some fear this may have jeopardized and altered his future trajectory.

Despite some not being entertained, Stevenson was clearly in control throughout the fight. He displayed his ability and made this victory appear effortless. Nonetheless, Artem proved to be a respectable opponent and didn’t shy away from the exchanges, however Stevenson was too elusive and slippery in the ring to be affected by much. Early in the fight, the crowd was energized and excited to see Stevenson, however as the fight progressed many began to head for the doors

“When guys come in here and they try to survive to the 12th round … I tried to cut off the ring, but maybe I have to cut off the ring a bit more,” Stevenson states. “He’d go one way and then go the other way, so I gotta go back in the gym and work on cutting off the gym.”

Ultimately, Stevenson remains the WBC Lightweight Champion and is extremely interesting as many will speculate and observe closely his next moves. Moving forward, his next opponent and business decisions can be pivotal for the future of his career.

“... I want to fight the best fighters in boxing, Stevenson continues. “That’s how you’ll see the best version of me. Put me in the ring with somebody else who wants to fight back and compete. That’s when you’ll get the best out of me.”

Biggest Takeaways

Arguably, the night's biggest moment came from the rising star Abdullah Mason, who forced Luis Lebron’s corner to throw in the towel in the third round of a ten-round fight. Not only was Mason in complete control throughout the fight, but he displayed an elite level of poise and ability to change and adapt when called upon. Mason also displayed showmanship that many believe will translate on the big stage. Some are optimistic that he can be a star in boxing if given the right opportunity.

“A lot of people say they’re ready to fight, but are they?” Mason states. “Do they want the smoke?”

Another standout was Keyshawn Davis. Despite not being able to secure the TKO as he promised in the press conference, he did put on a show. Davis has been a respected lightweight for some time, but many believe he’s ready for a big fight to bring him the recognition he truly deserves. Some were skeptical of Davis’s future and what could be next for him to solidify his legacy.

“I know {WBO lightweight champion} Denys Berinchyk mentioned my name,” Davis responded when asked what’s next for him. “I’m targeting Berinchyk.”
